Extracurricular Trips: Driver, who volunteers to drive extracurricular trips, will follow the assignment process designed by the administration. Whenever possible, a driver will drive his/her normal bus for extracurricular trips. Upon returning, the bus shall be cleaned and fueled. Substitute Driver: The special needs of these students may require that some rules and regulations governing the transportation of special education students differ from the rules and regulations governing the transportation of regular education students. Special Education Bus - The bus may be parked at a different location because of the length of the route. Special Education Bus Driver - The qualifications for this driver are same as the regular drivers; however, the ability to understand and to handle special needs students is given strong consideration. The special needs bus driver must be able to pass a timed proficiency test showing their ability to properly use all the restraints and emergency equipment associated with the transportation of students with special needs. Other items: Driver is not to use bus for assisting other vehicles by pushing, towing, or starting other vehicles. Driver will be responsible for damage if bus is used for the above. Essential Functions: * Bus driver is to see that all children he/she transports arrive at school and are returned safely and promptly. * Attendance and punctuality must meet the criteria established by the School Board. Driver shall arrive and check in 20 minutes prior to his/her scheduled departure time. Driver shall leave at his/her appointed time and arrive promptly at each stop as scheduled. * Maintain a regular schedule as directed. * Stop at only designated stop(s). * Transport only authorized children and adult sponsors. * Students shall have assigned seats on each bus. Driver is expected to learn his/her students' names, know which students are on board, and address them cordially as they board and department from the bus. * Driver shall attend periodic meetings as scheduled. These meetings shall take place within the 8-hour day/40-hour week. Driver is required to attend an annual driver orientation meeting prior to the start of each school year. * Driver's Responsibility for student conduct: * Bus driver is to instruct children on their bus concerning school bus safety rules. * Bus driver is to keep order on the bus, to treat all children in a civil manner and to see that no child is imposed upon or mistreated while in his/her charge. * Driver must follow the transportation student discipline procedures. * Students shall not be put off a school bus except at their regular designated (or parent requested) stop, or at school. * Condition of the Bus: * It is the driver's responsibility to keep the bus clean, inside, and outside, at all times. It is the responsibility of the driver to thoroughly clean their bus, or an assigned bus, at the end of each school year. The bus shall be inspected and approved by the shop manager. * It is the driver's responsibility to inform the maintenance mechanic of needed repairs and possible developing mechanical problems. * All busses' fuel tanks must be fueled upon their return to the garage area anytime the fuel tanks are below ½ full. * Bus Inspection: * Each driver shall have his/her bus in exceptionally good, clean condition for state police inspection. * Extracurricular Trips: * Driver, who volunteers to drive extracurricular trips, will follow the assignment process designed by the administration. Whenever possible, a driver will drive his/her normal bus for extracurricular trips. Upon returning, the bus shall be cleaned and fueled. * Substitute Driver: * The special needs of these students may require that some rules and regulations governing the transportation of special education students differ from the rules and regulations governing the transportation of regular education students. * Special Education Bus - The bus may be parked at a different location because of the length of the route. * Special Education Bus Driver - The qualifications for this driver are same as the regular drivers; however, the ability to understand and to handle special needs students is given strong consideration. * The special needs bus driver must be able to pass a timed proficiency test showing their ability to properly use all the restraints and emergency equipment associated with the transportation of students with special needs. * Other items: * Driver is not to use bus for assisting other vehicles by pushing, towing, or starting other vehicles. Driver will be responsible for damage if bus is used for the above. * Bus driver is to carry out all other duties as set forth in the transportation handbook, or as directed by the transportation administrator. * Driver is prohibited from using cell phone while operating a school bus. Cell phone may only be used for an emergency to notify transportation. This includes playing music through cell phone while driving. * Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Administrator. * Comply with all Avon Community School Corporation policies/guidelines/procedures and protocols.
