A.G. Leventis history

1951 The Nigerian Bottling Company Ltd (NBC) is incorporated in November 1951, as a subsidiary of the A.G Leventis Group with the franchise to bottle and sell products of the Coca-Cola Company in Nigeria.

1952 The country’s premier International hotel started operations which was considered “a landmark of the Lagos Metropolis”. The hotel is notable for having been the setting for the signing of Nigeria Declaration of Independence from Britain.

The Company later devolved into Leventis Motors Limited (established in 1958)

1965 The first store was opened in Lagos, providing a whole wide range of consumer goods and products.

He established one of the largest companies in West Africa and from 1966 served as Cyprus' honorary Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO.

In 1980, an independent Cypriot branch of the Foundation was established, to focus on the protection of cultural heritage of the island.

In West Africa, an area long connected with the Leventis family, the Leventis Foundation Nigeria was set up in 1988 to continue an already existing philanthropic programme.

Since 1992, substantial support has been given to the University of Cyprus in Nicosia.

In 1997 the Foundation endowed a biennial visiting professorship in Greek to be based with Classics at the University of Edinburgh.

From the beginning, initially under the Chairmanship of Constantine Leventis and from 2002, under the current chairman, Anastasios P. Leventis, the aim of the Foundation was to support educational, cultural, artistic and philanthropic causes in Cyprus, Greece and elsewhere.

During 2010-18, the Foundation established the Leventis Initiative on the impact of Greek on non-Greek culture in antiquity.

In addition to the biennial visiting professorship and conference, the Foundation has also supported studentships in the department and, in 2015, established a Chair in Byzantine Studies.
