1919

A.N. Deringer, Inc. (Deringer) was formed on August 1, 1919, when Mr.

What started as a small hay and grain operation in 1919 is now a leading supply chain partner with thirty locations strategically placed throughout the United States However, throughout a century of expansion, the headquarters has stayed consistently located in St Albans, Vermont.

In 1919, our founder Alfred Neel Deringer acquired portions of his employer’s business, the Raymond P. Lipe Company.

1929

In 1929, the company was granted Customs brokerage license No.

1930

The Tariff Act of 1930 required Customs brokers to post bonds on behalf of clients.

1951

land was purchased in Highgate Springs, Vermont, in 1951;

1952

an office was opened in Calais, Maine, in 1952;

1976

In 1976, Deringer obtained a freight forwarding license from the Federal Maritime Commission.

1988

In 1988, Deringer also added a USDA meat inspection facility to its Champlain, New York location.

1994

In 1994, the Customs Modernization Act resulted in the gradual elimination of tariffs between Canada and Mexico via the North American Free Trade Agreement.

2001

After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, United States Customs shifted its focus to security, which introduced new processes and programs to the industry.

2002

The Trade Act of 2002 required advance electronic transmission of information on inbound cargo.

2003

In 2003, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) was created under the newly-established Department of Homeland Security.

2009

A few years later in 2009, Deringer was selected to participate in a Broker Account Management pilot program and was one of nine brokers that participated in CBP’s Importer Self-Assessment Pre-Certification Program.

2018

One recent achievement is the election of Amy Magnus, Deringer’s Director of Customs Affairs and Compliance, to President of the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America in 2018.
