AbelCine company history timeline

1989

Founded by brothers Pete and Rich Abel in 1989, Abel Cine Tech, as it was then known, began as film camera repair outfit in Staten Island, NY. Pete and Rich worked at the bench, specializing in the repair of 16mm cameras from the innovative French manufacturer, Aaton.

1990

As one of the original staff members of AbelCine, Ian McCausland was integral to the formation of the company’s rental department back in 1990.

These and other "ahead of its time" issues put VPL out of business in 1990, but Virtual Reality continued to quietly evolve in military and medical training environments for the next two decades.

1993

In 1993, a resurgence in the popularity of 16mm acquisition helped Abel Cine Tech expand to include a full-fledged sales division, which fueled our steady growth.

He began as an Aaton camera electronics technician and was named the NY Service Manager in 2003.

2004

By the end of 2004, with an increasing number of 24p video cameras being brought to market by Sony and Panasonic, Abel Cine Tech had evolved from a service company into a full-faceted sales and rental organization.

2007

Girvan was born and raised in New York and moved west in 2007 to head up the service department of the newly expanded AbelCine LA Office.

2008

2009

Our nationwide sales presence was further enhanced with the acquisition of Fletcher Chicago’s Sales Division and the subsequent opening of our midwestern sales office in 2009.

Most recently, Ian shot and edited a short-form documentary about vintage travel trailers called Aluminum Skins, which was screened at the 2009 Phoenix Film Festival.

2010
