He designed a machine that created ice using a compressor powered by a horse, water, wind-driven sails or steam and was granted a patent for it in 1851.

1922

In 1922, Carrier Engineering Corporation installed the first well-designed cooling system for theaters at Metropolitan Theater in Los Angeles, which pumped cool air through higher vents for better humidity control and comfort throughout the building.

1931

Also in 1931, Frigidaire begins marketing year-round, central air conditioning systems for homes.

1932

The units hit the market in 1932 but are not widely purchased due to high cost.

1958

JOHNSON, AIR-EASE: Founded in 1958 by C.A. Olsen (who started Luxaire) and brother-in-law Johnson.

WILLIAMS OIL-O-MATIC: Last listed in 1972.

1975

CENTURY: Century Engineering Corp, Cedar Rapids, purchased by Heat Controller in 1975.

STEWART-WARNER: Last listed in 1976.

1980

FEDDERS: Left the unitary market around 1980.

1982

SINGER: In 1982 became climate control unit of SnyderGeneral Corp. with name dropped.

1984

ARCO: Acquired by SnyderGeneral in 1984 from Atlantic Richfield.

SOUTHWEST MFG: Became Heatwave International in 1984, later going bankrupt.

Trane was purchased by American-Standard in 1984.

1986

Tempstar’s name replaced Whirlpool after Inter-City Gas Co. bought Heil-Quaker in 1986.

1987

INTERTHERM: Became Nordyne company in 1987.

1988

DAIKIN US: Japanese company making mini splits withdrew from the US market in 1988.

Air conditioning division was sold to Lennox in 1988, and renamed Armstrong Air.

1989

WEATHERKING: Former trade name of Addison Products, sold to Rheem in 1989.

1991

Hupp in bankruptcy in 1991.

1992

Since 1992, the Energy Department has issued conservation standards for manufacturers of residential central air conditioners and heat pumps.

1998

Tappan name revived by Nordyne in 1998 under license from White-Westinghouse.

2012

2016

Currently (2016), Westinghouse HVAC products are manufactured under license by Nordyne.
