Academy of Holy Angels company history timeline

1890

In 1890 it was incorporated as Holy Angels, Collegiate Institute for Young Ladies and Preparatory School for Little Girls.

1931

15, 1931, during a record-breaking heat wave of 104 degrees, the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet open a new Academy of Holy Angels with 107 students in grades 1-12 on its current site at 66th Street and Nicollet Avenue, Richfield.

1932

Holy Angels is formally accredited on May 2, 1932.

1934

Founded in 1879 by Sister Mary Nonna Dunphy, one of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the school was opened in Fort Lee, New Jersey as a boarding and day school for girls from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Its motto was then and remains now "Vitae Via Virtus." The Holy Angels Board voted to change the name of the school to the Academy of the Holy Angels in 1934 when Sister M. Angeline Hughes was Principal.

1964

The school had operated a grammar school in addition to the high school for decades and many graduates were known as "12 year Angels." The grammar school was discontinued completely in 1964 prior to the move from Fort Lee.

1973

In May of 1973, Holy Angels was incorporated as a private independent school in the State of Kentucky.

1984

In his letter granting the request, he stated, “God will build your school. It was in 1984 that Holy Angels was able to purchase an abandoned telephone building in Old Louisville only a few blocks from its original location.

1995

Also in 1995 a long awaited dream for Sister Elise and other members of the Academy was fulfilled.

2000

The former site was replaced by Mediterranean Towers South at 2000 Linwood Avenue, on the northeast corner of Main Street and Linwood Avenue.

2007

In the fall of 2007 AHA introduced Project Laptop, a one-to-one computing program.

2008

In the fall of 2008, AHA President Jill Reilly received a Leading with Faith award from the Archdiocese of St Paul and Minneapolis and the Catholic Spirit.

2009

In the spring of 2009, AHA earned a Minnesota Quality Award from the Minnesota Council for Quality.

2010

In April 2010, Holy Angels was the only school named for a site visit during the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) convention in Minneapolis.

2011

AHA President Jill Reilly announced her plans to retire effective July, 2011, and Tom Shipley was named as AHA's new president.

2017

The AHA Way program is honored as the MISF 2017 Program award for a positive school culture.

2021

The new iCenter for STEM Education opens in the fall of 2021.

AHA is named a 2021 School of Distinction by Cognia, a global education accreditation agency.
