Academy of the Sacred Heart"The Rosary" company history timeline

1867

After almost fifty years of pursuing missionary work in unsettled areas along the river, the nuns returned to establish a school in the Vieux Carré in 1867 and named it Mater Admirabilis.

1873

On October 1, 1873, the school opened in a residence at Sixth Street and Washington Avenue.

In 1873, at the request of Bishop Claude-Marie Dubuis of the Diocese of Galveston, a group of the Sisters moved from New York to Waco to start a house and establish a school.

1874

The Academy of the Sacred Heart received its name partially because the property on which it stood was purchased on June 12, 1874—the day of the Feast of the Sacred Heart.

1876

The 1876 Waco city directory describes it as follows: “Its course of study is complete and comprehensive, and among its patrons and pupils are the representatives of the various denominations of the city and county.

1877

Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart was founded in 1877 by the Sisters of St Francis of Penance and Christian Charity.

1887

Schools of the Sacred Heart San Francisco was founded in 1887 and is one of more than 150 Sacred Heart schools and colleges in 41 countries around the world, each with its own educational model while embracing unifying Goals and Criteria.

1898

In 1898, Sacred Heart Academy opened a new school building on Washington Street, but within 30 years it had outgrown these quarters.

1906

In 1906 the same architects added two wings to the front of the building.

1908

The new campus consisted of a Tudor Mansion, built in 1908, and a red brick building known as the School House.

1913

In the 1913 expansion, the structure grew vertically rather than horizontally.

1930

On May 11, 1930, the new Sacred Heart Academy opened with 230 students and 14 faculty members.

1946

On September 9, 1946, Sacred Heart Academy opened its doors on Greene Street in New Haven, providing young women with a new opportunity to lead and make a difference.

However, student enrollment had dwindled by 1946.

More than 7,000 alumnae have graduated from Sacred Heart Academy since our founding in 1946 forever connected by the strong bonds of our SHA values and traditions.

1950

The first year the School welcomed 17 young girls who graduated in May of 1950.

1957

In the summer of 1957, Sister Antonine initiated and directed the monumental task of moving the Academy from Greene Street to Mount Sacred Heart, Hamden, a strikingly beautiful 127 acre campus.

1958

The first class to graduate from Mount Sacred Heart was the class of 1958.

1982

In 1982, the Marie Cornelia Dooley Building was built to house classrooms, laboratories, a multimedia center and a gymnasium.

1998

A new three-story wing on the corner of Jena and Carondelet Streets opened in the fall of 1998 for Middle School (grades 5-8) and Upper School (Grades 9-12) students.

2005

In 2005, the new Mater Campus was opened on the corner of St Charles and Napoleon avenues.

2006

The school opened in 2006 and currently educates boys in grades Pre-Kindergarten – 9th.

2011

In the fall of 2011, Sacred Heart opened its new Arts and Athletics Complex.

2015

The Academy celebrated its 125th anniversary on the historic St Charles Avenue in 2015 and continues to stand as a registered New Orleans landmark in uptown New Orleans.

2016

In 2016, a history museum was installed on the first floor of the building.
