An account planner is a professional that helps clients achieve their goals by helping them improve their accounts, marketing strategies, and sales techniques. Specifically, they develop and maintain client accounts to help increase sales and profit in general.
On a typical week, an account planner's duties revolve around conducting market research, assisting clients with goal-setting, generating creative concepts for marketing, working with account executives regarding business development opportunities, and conducting competitive analysis. They work in regular offices and may be expected to travel for business on occasion to attend business meetings, seminars, and conferences.
Most account planners have at least a bachelor's degree in advertising, business, marketing, or a similar field. They also typically have extensive experience in the ad and marketing industry and may have worked a supervisory role. Moreover, successful account planners have high-level skill sets in communication, marketing, collaboration, market analysis, and creativity.
The average salary of an account planner is $64,000 per year. The bulk of job opportunities can be found in media, technology, advertising, and telecommunications companies.

The best states for people in this position are Delaware, Washington, New Jersey, and New York. Account planners make the most in Delaware with an average salary of $91,119. Whereas in Washington and New Jersey, they would average $90,765 and $88,585, respectively. While account planners would only make an average of $81,280 in New York, you would still make more there than in the rest of the country. We determined these as the best states based on job availability and pay. By finding the median salary, cost of living, and using the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Location Quotient, we narrowed down our list of states to these four.
