Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

Chubb Global Casualty (CGC) Domestic is looking for an applicant to fill the position of Underwriter in our New York Branch. Formerly ACE Risk Management, CGC is the largest operating division in Chubb Major Accounts; our focus is Fortune 1,000 companies with risk taking appetites. Industries include major league sports, entertainment & media companies, large manufacturing & servicing industries, national retail and restaurant chains, and large transportation companies We offer customized & complex primary loss sensitive programs tailored to our client's business needs and operations.The core lines of business include: Workers Compensation, General Liability and Auto Liability.
Responsibilities

The Underwriter will:

* Handle day-to-day servicing for a book of large, complex, loss-sensitive accounts.
* Underwriting Fortune 100 companies with annual premium in excess of $1 million minimum.
* Be responsible for growth and retention of assigned book.
* Negotiate the annual pricing, terms and conditions on renewal business.
* Work on new business opportunities with key brokerage houses in the NY Metro Region, design and propose appropriate program structures and pricing for said opportunities.
* Maintain and develop relationships with their brokers and clients.
* Develop a pipeline with our major trading partners, as well as engaging other business units for cross-selling opportunities.
* Engage with National Brokers
* Learn in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree
* At least 5+ years underwriting experience including time spent in the primary casualty loss sensitive space
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
* Presentation and public speaking skills
* Strong negotiations skills
* Local broker and insurance marketplace relationships
* Knowledge and understanding of current insurance marketplace conditions
* Understanding and adherence to organizational and regulatory rules, and ability to adhere to underwriting authority
* Understanding of Workers Compensation, General Liability, and Auto Liability Insurance coverage, terms and conditions - included but not limited to ISO AL & GL and NCCI Workers Compensation coverage forms and endorsements.
* Understanding of large deductible programs and the credit and collateral implications of such programs
* Ability to identify risk exposures, special or common hazards, and appropriate controls. Ability to select risk based on exposure and hazard analysis. Ability to analyze claims and loss trends

Hybrid Opportunity: 2 days in-office/3 remote

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and underwrite a territory of new business and renewals to maintain profitable results, by identifying changes in risk exposures or characteristics, changes in loss trends as measured by loss ratio, loss frequency or other measures.
  • Develop relationships with agents and other business areas through effective communication.
  • Review reports for action needed on accounts for territory. Collaborate with management, SBU's or Line of Business Units and take appropriate action.
  • Process verbal and written correspondence with agents and/or insureds as required. Accompany Account Manager on agency & insured visits. Be an active participant during account reviews.
  • Develop an understanding of how to apply the rules and rates to unique rating situations involving new and renewal policies, endorsements, and cancellations and apply this criteria to accommodate the commercial lines automated system or other automated systems as required, including processing state filings for accounts, if needed.
  • Input underwriting information regarding new or renewal policies on appropriate automated systems, and utilize other available automated systems efficiently and effectively.
  • Embrace a culture of Continuous Improvement (CI) and actively identify opportunities for improvement to increase efficiency.


Knowledge & Requirements:

  • Keep current on all changes effecting unit's work production and on changes within the insurance industry.
  • Highly motivated and results-oriented
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Good analytical skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite


Education & Experience:

  • College degree preferred
  • 3+ years Commercial Lines or Large Account/Alternative Risk Underwriting Experience preferred
