AccuWeather company history timeline

1962

1962: As a Penn State grad student, Doctor Joel N. Myers begins forecasting for a local gas company.

1964

He retired from the university ten years later. (Myers's younger brother Barry joined the business in 1964, eventually becoming executive vice-president and general counsel.)

1965

In 1965, when WPSX, Penn State's educational VHF television station became a reality, the weather program continued as a cooperative effort between the brand new public television station and the Department of Meteorology.

1974

The first geostationary weather satellite pictures were broadcast routinely on a new version of the weather program, State of the Weather/Shape of the World in 1974.

1975

The business was incorporated in November 1975 as Accu-Weather, Inc.

1983

In 1983, in none other than Charles Hosler's office, who was then Dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, a new format for the weather show was born.

1984

The company's AccuData real-time weather database was introduced in 1984.

1989

AccuWeather acquired Oklahoma City's WeatherScan International Corporation in 1989.

1991

By 1991, AccuWeather had begun transmitting print-ready pages directly to newspaper printing systems.

1992

In recognition of AccuWeather’s 30th anniversary celebration, November 15, 1992 was proclaimed AccuWeather Day in Pennsylvania.

1998

An aviation-related weather site debuted in 1998.

1999

In early 1999, AccuWeather rolled out Forecast Center, a turnkey, automated service that allowed local television stations to transmit graphics and live, two-way footage of AccuWeather's own meteorologists.

2003

2003: AccuWeather launches the first high-definition TV weather system.

2004

Previously shown on select PBS stations, Weather World began airing on the Pennsylvania Cable Network in November 2004.

2005

"AccuWeather Leads the Nation and Serves the World," State College, Penn.: AccuWeather, Inc., 2005.

2009

In February 2009, the central Pennsylvania PBS station, WPSU, brought Weather World back to its airwaves.

2018

Four AccuWeather meteorologists have been recognized with the AMS Award for "Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Applied Meteorology," including Myers, who was recognized in 2018.

2019

Introduced in January 2019 at the AMS Annual Meeting, AccuWeather's new scale was utilized this past hurricane season, for example, warning Bahamians that Hurricane Dorian would be a RealImpact of 5, so they would understand the imminent danger and act accordingly to remain safe and secure property.

2020

Having more recognitions than any other commercial weather company, AccuWeather will provide leadership and insights throughout AMS' 2020 Annual Meeting, in keeping with its "AMS Past, Present and Future" theme.
