    ABOUT THE JOB The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time, term-limited position of Director of Strategic Communications in the Communications & Marketing Department of the ACLU's National office in New York, NY or Washington, DC. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month. This is a three-year term-limited position. The ACLU Communications & Marketing department creates, maintains, and expands message narratives to engage our supporters and other target audiences, to help protect and expand civil liberties and civil rights, and illustrate the value and impact of the ACLU's transformational work. Through our messaging, engagement with newsmakers, our written content, creative branding, and visual identity, we encourage support for the ACLU and help to build a more perfect union. WHAT YOU'LL DO Reporting to the Head of Strategic Communications, the Director of Strategic Communications will advance communications initiatives in collaboration with a team of communications and marketing professionals, and other members of ACLU's digital, legal, advocacy, fundraising, and affiliate support teams. The Director will lead the development and execution of integrated communications strategies for high priority campaigns, issues and spokespeople. They will manage communications strategists who advance key programmatic areas, including speech, national security, voting rights, privacy, tech, and abuse of power. YOUR DAY TO DAY Design and implement integrated communications campaigns for priority projects and initiatives, including multi-issue campaigns, nationwide rallies and other special projects. Engage a suite of tactics to develop said plans - including earned media, creator engagement, paid advertising, social media, multimedia, email/SMS and website/blog content - in partnership with relevant communications strategists, channel owners, content creators and issue experts. Manage communications strategists by overseeing critical workstreams, offering strategic guidance, informing priorities, directing and mobilizing communications and marketing staff, and troubleshooting as challenges arise across departments. Lead and oversee the development of integrated communications strategies for key legal, advocacy, policy and narrative priorities across the core issues you oversee with communications strategists. Help identify strategic priorities and plans to help respond to the news of the day and to proactively get ahead of opportunities to advance the organization's communications goals. Write messaging and core materials for issues, campaigns, new filings and more leveraging polling, research and other insights to inform key narratives. Establish strong working relationships with legal, advocacy, policy, and development colleagues across the organization, as well as affiliates and partner organizations. Work in coalition within and outside of the ACLU to develop a strong understanding of issues and team dynamics to help inform workflows and communications strategy. Direct rapid response communications - including during off hours - in partnership with relevant communications strategists. Support the Head of Strategic Communications and other department leadership team members in crisis response. In partnership with the Earned Media and Strategic Engagement team, devise and execute a strategy to strengthen and maintain relationship building with key news editors, reporters and broadcast bookers including providing support for ACLU spokespersons ahead of media engagements. In coordination with department leaders and communication strategists, support the development of and execution of brand awareness, thought leadership and advocacy campaigns associated with key issue areas. Partner with the department's operations unit and team leads to regularly evaluate and improve department-wide workflows and help make decisions about resourcing needs. Oversee media and communications vendors, consultants, and freelancers within allocated budget for the department to achieve maximum impact. Contribute to department-wide measurement and evaluation efforts regarding the influence and impact achieved by the communications strategies of the ACLU. Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned. Consistent with our compensation philosophy, there is a set salary for each role based on geographic work location. The annual salary for this position is $188,816 (Level D), reflecting the salary of a position based in New York, NY. WHAT YOU'LL DO Reporting to the Associate Director, Sustainer Retention, the Manager will be key to growing the ACLU's Guardians of Liberty monthly giving program. Representing over 60% of the c4 funding raised by the Nationwide Membership team, monthly donors are the centerpiece of the ACLU's Nationwide Membership program. This position will be responsible for helping to manage marketing efforts across multiple channels to acquire, convert, retain, upgrade and recapture sustaining donors. YOUR DAY TO DAY Manage upwards of 148 marketing campaigns annually, designed to acquire, upgrade, convert, and recapture sustainers through direct mail, email, texting, digital ads and telemarketing. Oversight will include but not be limited to managing segmentation strategies to ensure donors are receiving the right ask at the right time, data pulls to ensure that segmentation strategy was properly executed, copy review to ensure that the ACLU's message is accurately translated into an effective ask, and bluelines to ensure final product aligns with strategy. Manage telemarketing vendor call performance through close monitoring to manage quality control, review donor feedback, update talking points and manage volume and scale in response to media moments. Ensure that vendor invoices accurately reflect work promised and completed. Work with vendors to ensure that issues are corrected. Track and report on monthly sustainer billing success: success rates, month over month performance, and reported decline reasons. Use success reports to lead regular strategic planning on how to increase success rates. Handle escalated and high-dollar sustainer pledge inquiries and concerns: updating pledge details, looking into duplicate payment concerns, and similar issues Assist in day-to-day management of direct marketing campaigns, with a focus on telemarketing, email, and text. WHAT YOU'LL DO The VMS Community Manager will report to the VMS Data Director and will be responsible for supporting the ACLU's VMS and voter file platforms. YOUR DAY TO DAY Administer aspects of the ACLU's VMS and voter file platforms, including but not limited to: NGP-VAN and EveryAction. This includes monitoring the use of the systems to ensure compliance with ACLU data practices Offer thoughtful and speedy data and technology support to diverse teams with varying needs and levels of expertise Function as part of a national data team to build and maintain the shared state and national data infrastructure necessary to support organizational goals Track, report on, and disseminate analysis of program results, voter contact, online supporter outreach, and data relevant to various aspects of our work Provide strategic guidance on the best tactics and tools to achieve goals of the programs you're assigned to support Lead on the front lines ensuring we are delivering impactful solutions to the field: setting and meeting high standards of customer support and relationship building; ensuring constituents get the most out of our suite of tools and products; crafting reporting to ensure we are building relationships and providing the highest level of constituent support and strategic guidance Develop and coordinate long-term plans and process improvements for providing services and support to campaigns for upcoming cycles Ensure our data, tools and products are documented to maximize usability and troubleshooting Coordinate communication with all stakeholders about tools, services, support, training to various community constituencies Collaborate on a comprehensive training program for all relevant departments to ensure effective and efficient use of VMS data, tools, services, and technology, Maintain awareness of emerging opportunities and challenges on key policy and political trends Maintain awareness of the work to facilitate representation of the Department internally and externally Exercise independent judgment to solve problems and determine creative solutions Demonstrate an ability to be flexible and adjust priorities as necessary in order to adapt to changing external environment Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned This position requires flexibility in work schedule, including the ability to work nontraditional hours FUTURE ACLU'ERS WILL Be committed to advancing the mission of the ACLU Center and embed the principles of equity, inclusion and belonging in their work by demonstrating commitment to diversity with an approach that respects and values multiple perspectives Be committed to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and conflicts WHAT YOU'LL BRING Experience in an organizing or data management focused role for a progressive organization Ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences A vision for how community collaborations and strategic support, coupled with resources such as tools or products, provide decisive edges in the field Ability to remain focused and effective in a fast-paced environment, with multiple competing priorities Passion for training, documentation, and knowledge/best practice sharing Ability to understand and deploy systems that are managed across multiple parts of a team Oriented towards moving fast while also maintaining a level of patience with others Strong independent work ethic and team collaboration skills Excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills Previous experience using EveryAction and NGPVAN a must Previous experience providing support to staff and/or volunteers a plus Fluency, expertise and experience in multiple ACLU issue areas, a plus Willingness to travel COMPENSATION The ACLU is committed to equity, transparency, and clarity in pay. Consistent with our compensation philosophy, there is a set salary for each role based on geographic work location. The annual salary for this position is $137,206 (Level F), reflecting the salary of a position based in New York, NY. Salaries are subject to a regional pay adjustment if authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.
