    About the Role The ACLU seeks a Summer Legal Intern in the Speech, Privacy and Technology Project of the ACLU's National office in New York City. This position can be remote or hybrid. Qualifying applicants must currently be matriculated legal students and must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship. The Team: The Speech, Privacy and Technology Project is dedicated to protecting and expanding the First Amendment freedoms of expression, association, and inquiry; expanding the right to privacy and increasing the control that individuals have over their personal information; and ensuring that civil liberties are enhanced rather than compromised by new advances in science and technology. The project is currently litigating cases and conducting other advocacy efforts on a variety of issues, including political protest, freedom of expression online, privacy of electronic information, journalists' rights, scientific and academic freedom, openness in the courts, privacy rights at the border, and the impact of big data and algorithmic decision-making. What You'll Do: The intern will be responsible for working alongside the team and assisting in all aspects of litigation. Your Day to Day: Conduct legal research and analysis to support new and active litigation projects Aid in drafting of legal memoranda, pleadings, affidavits, motions, and briefs Draft and edit public education and non-litigation advocacy materials Provide support and assistance to ACLU affiliates and cooperating attorneys What You'll Bring: The internship is open to students who are in law school who have completed their 1L year by Summer 2026 or are in an LLM program. The Team: The Disability Rights Program's mission is to achieve an America free of discrimination against people with disabilities; where people with disabilities are valued, integrated members of society who have full access to education, homes, health care, jobs, families, voting and civic engagement. We fight to ensure that people with disabilities are no longer segregated into, and over-represented in, civil and criminal institutions such as nursing homes, psychiatric hospitals, jails, and prisons. The ACLU has fought for decades for the rights of people with disabilities - achieving key wins to stop coerced mental health treatment and unnecessary institutionalization, as well as playing a role in the drafting of the ADA. DRP litigates and advocates to use disability rights laws to end the overrepresentation of people with disabilities in the criminal legal system, including pursuing first of its kind litigation to ensure that municipalities provide trained, non-police responders to people experiencing mental health crises. We also litigate and advocate to promote alternatives to guardianship and to secure equal access to the ballot. We also provide support to affiliates and the National office on disability rights issues that intersect with core civil liberties. The ACLU has recently strengthened its work at the intersection of disability, veterans' rights, and civil liberties. This internship focuses specifically on this emerging area of work. What You'll Do: The intern will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working alongside the team and assisting in legal research and writing, factual investigation, and strategic advocacy to advance our litigation and integrated advocacy. The Team: The Immigrants' Rights Project is part of the Legal Department of the national ACLU and has offices in New York and San Francisco. For nearly 40 years, the Project has litigated in trial and appellate courts across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court, to protect the civil rights and civil liberties of immigrants and seek equal justice under the law. Our work has focused on due process, access to the courts, unfair detention, equal treatment, and state and local laws and policies. What You'll Do: Legal interns serve a vital role in the LGBTQ & HIV project by completing research and writing projects in furtherance of the project's core work. They are regularly given assignments by attorneys across the project working on a wide range of substantive issues that aim to advance strategic goals through litigation, policy advocacy, and public education. Their work is closely supervised by the primary intern supervisor as well as the assigning attorneys to ensure that the interns are exposed to a range of attorneys with varying experiences, management styles, and skills. The goal of the internship program is both to gain creative insights and substantive contributions from the interns, while also investing in the development of future civil rights advocates fighting for LGBTQ people and people living with HIV.     About the Organization The Children's Law Center (CLC) is a non-profit legal services organization that represents children in custody, visitation, guardianship, paternity, family offense, and related child protective (abuse or neglect) proceedings in the Family Courts and the Integrated Domestic Violence Parts of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, and in appeals therefrom. CLC represents approximately 5,000 children annually in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, providing holistic and zealous representation and support in the Court, the community and the legislature. CLC's mission is to empower our clients, prevent trauma and promote wellbeing. Job description Under the leadership of the Borough Director, the staff attorney will work to effectuate the mission of CLC. The staff attorney will ensure that CLC maintains high standards of representation and client services. In collaboration with paralegals, social workers and a writing unit, staff attorneys maintain their own caseloads, taking responsibility for zealous representation from intake through trial. Essential Duties/Responsibilities Conduct interviews with clients and other individuals; Handle court appearances; Subpoena or otherwise obtain all necessary documentation in order to prepare cases; Maintain comprehensive and well-organized case files on case management system; Regularly handle intake, comprehensively prepare cases for conference, negotiation or trial; Analyze legal issues, develop legal strategy and facilitate its implementation; Properly evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a case; Explore alternatives to litigation and negotiate the best possible resolution for clients; Collaborate with the Writing, Social Work, Paralegal and Client Services teams to best represent CLC clients; Communicate with the Court, opposing counsel, and others in a timely manner, as necessary; Maintain ethical standards of practice; Regularly and appropriately respond to client, community and staff concerns; Attend training sessions pertinent to practice; Perform other duties as requested. Key Qualifications and Competencies Admitted to practice law in New York State Demonstrated skills in advocacy, cultural competence, mediation and interviewing Demonstrated commitment to public interest and policy Preference for knowledge of family court, custody, domestic violence, and child welfare Demonstrated experience teaming with colleagues to find solutions to complex situations Effective communication skills (written and verbal), time management, and organizational skills Curiosity and eagerness to continue learning new skills and grow professionally and take an optimistic approach to new challenges Proven ability to work independently with excellent judgment, diplomacy, professionalism and able to prioritize requests, track and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet deadlines; Demonstrated ability to exercise complete discretion when working with confidential and sensitive information; Desire to work in a busy organization that represents children.
