General Electric acoustical engineer job description

The Acoustics Engineer will work with the Acoustics and Installation Aerodynamic team to perform community noise assessments for commercial aircraft while identifying opportunities for overall engine and component noise reduction. In this role, you will also support full and subscale acoustic testing while assisting with acoustic tool development. In addition, the Acoustic Engineer will use computational aeroacoustics (CAA) methods to analyze and predict commercial aircraft engine component and overall system noise.
Essential Responsibilities

As the Acoustics Engineer, you will:

* Execute, with guidance from senior engineering resources, acoustic analysis, design, test, and integration required to define and support assigned components, assemblies, and systems that meet business standards and product requirements
* Document and communicate acoustic design, analysis, and test data results
* Perform computational aeroacoustics (CAA) analyses
* Design and assess acoustic liners and treatment technologies utilizing a range of in-house and commercial tools
* Support the acoustics team through computational modeling, tool development, and validation
* Prepare and present technical information to internal and external customers
* Assist with the preparation and execution of test programs achieving test objectives within schedule and budget guidelines
* Contribute to process improvement, sharing lessons learned, and best practice documentation
* Interface with internal leadership, suppliers, partners, and airframe customers
* Prepare invention disclosures to protect technology that gives the business a competitive advantage, as well as protecting the intellectual property rights of the company
* Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation, and presentation of technical data to internal and external GE customers using reports, records, and letters
* Support other GE businesses, internal and external customers, and suppliers as required

Qualifications/Requirements

* Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related discipline
* Demonstrated interest in the acoustics domain

* Master's or PhD degree in Engineering with a focus in acoustics
* Experience performing computational analyses on high performance computing (HPC) resources

Job Description

We are seeking a winter/spring Co-op to work with device development group of Skyworks Solutions. Our group is the R&D group focusing on developing the new acoustic technology, including but not limited to device modeling and characterization, new fabrication process evaluation, problem resolution in product development, manufacture yield improvement, etc. The student intern will be working closely with team members, and may work with engineers across multiple functional teams as needed.

This position will be as a SAW/BAW technology development intern in the technology and manufacturing group (TMG), located at Skyworks' Irvine CA location. TMG focuses on simulation and design efforts to support Skyworks acoustic filter development. The acoustic filters are enabling components for Skyworks' high-volume front-end radio modules for cellular handset applications.

The intern's responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

+ FEM simulation of 2D and 3D SAW/BAW devices.

+ Refine and improve performance and reliability of acoustic resonators.

+ Support PDK, model and ADS based simulation.

+ Develop and validate the latest modeling methodology

+ Execute various measurement for acoustic devices

+ Performance data gathering and statistical analysis

+ Run circuit and electromagnetic simulation

The software tools used (may) include:

+ COMSOL

+ Matlab

+ Keysight ADS

+ ANSYS HFSS and Q3D

+ Various custom filter design and modeling tools

Key Qualifications:

+ Currently enrolled in PHD or MS program for Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Semiconductor Engineering, Material Science, Physics, other relevant engineering physical science.

+ Ability to work from January 2023 to June 2023.

+ Basic knowledge in circuit simulation ADS.

+ Basic understanding of RF design.

+ Basic skill in data processing and analysis (by Python, Matlab, etc) .

+ Should have career interest in RF Engineering, filters, or microwave acoustics.

+ Should have lab experience, including working with network analyzers and other RF test equipment.

+ It will a plus if you have experience in any of the following areas: acoustic device physics, thermal analysis, ADS ETH, EM simulation, web application development (the front end).

+ Self-motivated and a good team player

+ Must have experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

Essential Functions:

  • Design acoustic solutions for high performance loudspeakers
  • Build and evaluate prototypes to demonstrate that performance meets requirements
  • Further develop designs for mass production, in conjunction with manufacturing partners
  • Deliver projects in parallel through effective management of external consultants
  • Participate in competitive product analysis, benchmarking, and critical listening
  • Research and evaluate new technologies related to acoustics and loudspeakers
  • Conduct and participate in critical listening evaluations for all product categories

Qualifications:


The successful candidate will possess the following combination of experience, knowledge and skills:
  • Bachelor of Engineering or Science degree in Acoustics, or an Electro-Acoustic related subject such as Physics or Electronics
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in designing professional loudspeakers for professional applications
  • Transducer and system design (including high sensitivity, high power-handling, compression drivers, 70/100V constant voltage, passive and active crossovers...)
  • lumped element, FEA, and BEM modeling (horns, wave guides, and directivity control)
  • Advanced DSP techniques (equalization, dynamics, and directivity control)
  • Experience in loudspeaker measurement techniques (Audio Precision, Klippel, Clio, etc)
  • MATLAB programing experience
  • Experience in outdoor loudspeaker systems a definite advantage
  • A passion for audio

Work Environment:

  • Standard office hours, with some requirements for domestic and international travel to vendors and trade shows (less than 10%)
