The ACT was created in 1959 as competition for the SAT. It was supposed to be an achievement test that dealt with content learned in school rather than just cognitive reasoning skills.
When ACT was founded in 1959, it disrupted the assessment industry with a new approach to helping students better understand their readiness so they could take steps to improve it.
The ACT was co-founded by University of Iowa professor Everett Franklin Lindquist in 1959.
In 1974 a group of dedicated women founded the very first rape crisis center in Lee County.
In 1985, with the support of the community, ACT built a 35-bed safe shelter in Fort Myers to serve Lee County’s growing population.
However, it moved closer to the SAT as time went on, especially when the Science and Reading sections were created in 1989.
By 1998, the need had grown so much so that a 22-bed safe shelter was opened in Cape Coral.
With occupancy constantly being reached, the Fort Myers facility expanded in 2008 to accommodate a total of 68 beds along with additional office space for community education and victims’ counseling services.
In 2009, the CEO of ACT, Inc. was compensated over a million dollars.
And in 2015, a 19-bed safe shelter was opened to meet needs in LaBelle for Hendry and Glades counties.
Starting in 2015, the format of the essay was changed slightly.
Still, it may have to play catch up again after the SAT revamps its test model in 2016.
Rate how well ACT lives up to its initial vision.
