Tropicana Casino & Resort company history timeline

2010

Billionaire investor Icahn finalized controlling stake in Tropicana in 2010.

Filled with notorious speakeasy establishments, booze and betting, Atlantic City epitomized the prohibition era – an image of which has since been immortalized in the 2010 HBO series Boardwalk Empire.

The plan was to open in 2010.

2011

The opening was put off until 2011 and a lengthy fight to keep the project afloat ensued with developers seeking funding and lawmakers considering a number of tax breaks just to get it finished.

2012

In April 2012 Revel opened.

2014

In August 2014, Trump reportedly filed a lawsuit to take his name off the property, since he was no longer involved or invested, but a search for new ownership turned up empty and Trump Plaza shut down in September, rendering the suit moot.

Revel closed in September 2014, a little over two years since it opened.

In fact, in 2014 one-third of Atlantic City’s existing boardwalk casinos were shut down.

2016

He attempted to do the same with Trump Taj Mahal in 2016, though financial woes led to its closing and ensuing sale, setting up the eventual opening of Hard Rock Atlantic City.

2017

In October 2017, there was speculation that the property was again sold, but Straub initially denied these reports.

By 2017, the Tropicana appeared back on track, becoming the area’s No.

2018

In January of 2018 the sale to Colorado developer Bruce Deifik was officially announced.

Tropicana’s July 4th Fireworks were included in MSN’s 2018 list of “The Best 4th of July Fireworks in the USA”

The Icahn era ended in 2018.

Projections for 2018 currently indicate more modest but continued gains are likely.
