Under direct supervision of the histotechnologist to assists in daily tasks of clinical histology laboratory. Responsible for operation and maintenance of histology laboratory equipment's like automated stainer, tissue processor, formalin and xylene recycler. Organizing and Filing of surgical tissue blocks and distribution of slides. Stocking up reagent and supplies for the laboratory. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: * Responsible for waxing off and organizing embedded blocks in a timely manner and per established protocols. Handles discrepancies efficiently and in a positive manner. Cleans embedding area. * Performs computer functions for histology blocks, slides and procedure including assigning, labeling and ordering. * Responsible for accurate labeling and distribution of all histology slides * Responsible for changing reagents and solution in the histology tissue processor and stainer in timely manner * Maintains formalin and alcohol recycling functions. * Capable of multitasking and prioritizing tasks on hand for turnaround times of the laboratory * Manages inventory to maintain an appropriate level of supplies for histology laboratory, such as formalin-filled containers and labeled cassettes. * File block and slides for onsite and offsite storage. Education: High School Licensures/Certifications: Not Applicable Experience: 6 months of related phlebotomy experience/6 months related Laboratory accessioning experience Skills: * Knowledge of medical terminology * Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques and practices * Skill in oral and written communication * Skill in utilizing customer service techniques * Skill in performing basic arithmetic * Skills in using a computer and personal productivity applications * Ability to type * Ability to reduce anxiety in patients while performing patient care related duties Principal Duties and Responsibilities: * Extracts blood from patients and performs all Phlebotomy procedures, including children and infants according to established aseptic venipuncture technique. * Detailed documentation is done for all Phlebotomy rounds. * Detailed documentation of Outpatients that are called back to include Physicians office. * Enters accurate and complete patient demographic information, laboratory test orders, and verifies collection/receipt of specimens with completeness and accuracy. * Prepares and processes specimens for the testing in the clinical laboratory to include, labeling, measuring, aliquoting, centrifuging, and the like. Distributes specimens to and retrieves specimens from the appropriate work areas. * Performs Quality EKG's and completes all required demographic information. * Screens and interviews Autologus and Therapeutic Donors according to protocol accurately and completely. All donor room QC is completed on a daily basis. Universal precautions are followed in the Donor room. * All Donor documentation is completed accurrately and at time of donation * Completes associated responsibilities such as, centrifuge maintenance, label maintenance, disinfections of counters, filing and boxing requisitions. Stocks and maintains supplies. * Checks all Outpatient Orders for accuracy and matches requisition to Meditech orders and labels. * Ensures all stats are responded to in a timely manner. * Quest and Sheppard Pratt registrations are done accurately. * Actively participates in the Laboratory's continuing education program and meets requirements as described in the Laboratory Continuing Education Policy. Shares knowledge gained from seminars, workshops, etc. through formal and informal presentations. * Ensures patient safety by following procedure for patient identification. Always uses 2 patient identifiers. Double checks all specimens against orders entered in Meditech. * Packages and transports all specimens according to policy and procedures * Ensures that all specimens are sent to lab in a timely manner. Provides administrative assistance and logistical support to Histology Laboratory through a general understanding of Surgical Pathology Laboratory Operations and regulatory requirements. Essential Responsibilities: + Prepares cases to be grossed-in in the Histology laboratory, accessions cases, checks tissue-examination forms and specimens for completeness and accuracy, and labels specimen cassettes and slides with accession numbers according to varied specimen requirements. + Assists processing of specimens for testing at the Regional Laboratory Histology Department. + Follows established procedures for processing of patient samples. Determines the acceptability of specimens and acts on that information. + Places orders for tests to be performed at reference laboratory (ex. Stone analysis, tick ID, flow specimens, send-out specimens for derm and hematopathology cases, etc.). + Communicates with medical, clinical and technical staff at other laboratories and medical centers concerning specimen inquiries, problems, and investigations. + Assists Histology in the assurance that all departmental copies of reports and necessary tissue blocks and slides are maintained in chronological/numerical order and according to appropriate storage requirements. + Files and maintains microscope slides and paraffin blocks of surgical pathology cases. + Follows instrument and equipment maintenance and troubleshooting procedures. The responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to, the following: Providing quality and rapid lab results involving knowledge of laboratory analyses, proper procedures, work equipment, and safety procedures; Following the laboratory's procedures for specimen collection, handling, and processing, as well as for test analyses, reporting, and record maintenance of test results; Adhering to the laboratory's quality control policies and documenting all quality control activities and maintenance under the supervision of the Lab Technician on duty; Electronically ordering lab, x-ray, and medical supplies as directed; Notifying the Nurse and/or Physician when patient is ready for exam while communicating symptoms and relaying questions about lab or x-ray needs; Adhering to the established corrective action policies and procedures of the laboratory whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance and documenting those actions; Identifying and troubleshooting problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results either by correcting the problem or notifying the Lab Technician on duty, Lab Supervisor, or Lab Consultant; Receiving and distributing lab supplies as needed; Adhering to safety policies as defined by Patient First and OSHA; Assisting Nurses and Physicians with various forms of patient treatment and care; Handling Physician and Nurse requests with respect and in a timely manner; Fostering teamwork and ensuring a positive and professional atmosphere; Providing positive, warm, and friendly service in all interactions; Understanding and performing all duties as assigned. The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the performance of basic assigned Laboratory tasks. Responsibilities Performs specific duties in one or more of the following areas: Collects blood by performing venipunctures and/or capillary punctures, and other patients' specimens.
