Job Description:
Schedule 2-12-hour Shifts per week 6pm to 6:30am
Job Duties:
Understands all principle(s) involved in assigned procedures and applies this knowledge to the clinical situation or outcomes in clinical diagnosis management of the patient. (See department competency sheet.) Must be able to determine if specimen integrity issues, patient medication(s), other interfering substances that could affect patient testing results.
Operates, troubleshoots and maintains laboratory equipment, supplies; and performs procedures to ensure high quality, accurate and cost effective results in all areas of the laboratory.
Ensures accuracy of testing per manufacturer's guidelines and all applicable regulation. Interfaces with Hot Lines and service personnel to oversee proper functionality and repair of instruments.
Reports results within time limits established for procedures, reports results for STAT, critical values and other categories as defined by Laboratory policy.
Records patient data and other information quickly and accurately in the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) to ensure appropriate turnaround time and effective retrieval of patient testing results.
Collects and/or processes specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures for timely and accurate testing.
Performs and documents quality control as specified for each procedure meeting established internal and regulatory guidelines, accurately analyzes quality control results obtained before accepting and reporting patient testing results. Follow policies and procedures whenever tests systems are not within established acceptable levels. Notifies Supervisor or designee of discrepant quality control results
Participates in Quality Assurance activities to meet the Laboratory Quality Plan. Follows policies and procedures whenever tests systems are not within established acceptable levels. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results. Initiates, investigates and implements all necessary corrective action(s). Documents follow-up in the electronic software to resolve variances in procedures and outcome(s). Must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor or designee.
Performs proficiency testing in the same manner as patient specimens as part of the Laboratory Quality Plan.
Ensures a safe environment by demonstrating knowledge of techniques, procedures and correct use of protective barrier equipment.
Participates in the Laboratory Safety team to assist in Safety Audits, training and review of Laboratory Safety Policies.
Enhances professional growth development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community and students by participation in continuing education, in-service training and the School of Medical Technology lectures and bench training. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Ensures that all cost saving activities occur to meet all financial budgetary parameters and works with Supervisor/designee to ensure the most cost effective processes have been implemented, i.e. ordering reagents on time, ensuring correct orders are received, rotating stock to minimize waste, effective use of all resources to minimize waste.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Baccalaureate Degree in a Biological Science with completion of a NAACLS approved Medical Technology program along with certification from a nationally recognized certifying agency
OR
Baccalaureate Degree in a Biological Science with completion of a NAACLS approved Medical Technology program along with ASCP Certification

CLIA '88 Equivalent (HEW/HHS Certification)
OR
Registry Eligible - Baccalaureate Degree in a Biological Science and have completed a NAACLS accredited MT/CLS program AND be certified within a year of eligibility or be certified one year from date of hire.

The responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to the following:
Following the laboratory's procedure for specimen collection, handling, and processing, as well as test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of test results; Following the laboratory's quality control policies;
Documenting all quality controls activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance;
Identifying indicators that may impact test performance or reporting of test results and either making corrections or notifying Lab Supervisor;
Ordering, receiving, and distributing laboratory stock as needed in laboratory and treatment area;
Understanding all checklists and being able to perform all duties on the checklists associated with the position;
Adhering to safety policies as defined by Patient First and OSHA;
Providing positive, warm and friendly customer service in all interactions;
Fostering teamwork and a positive, professional atmosphere;
Completing other duties as directed.
Minimum education and professional requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:
Employee must be at least 18 years of age;
High school graduate or equivalent;
Keyboarding experience required;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
One year of clerical experience preferred;
One year of clinical experience preferred;
Minimum 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college, including chemistry, biology, and medical laboratory techniques, or an Associate degree in chemistry, biology or related science. Completion of clinical rotations in the areas of microbiology, urinalysis, chemistry and hematology; or Fifty week military Medical Laboratory Procedures course and meet qualifications for military enlisted occupational specialty of “Medical Laboratory Specialist”;
Registered Medical Technologists (M.T.) or Medical Laboratory Technicians (M.L.T.) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other recognized certification agency of medical laboratory professionals preferred;

Salary Range: $31.50 - $36.50, depending on experience.

Communications

It is expected staff to attend 75% of the department staff meetings throughout the year as well as initial and date staff meeting minutes. Must attend 100% of mandatory meetings unless approved by Manager/Supervisor in advance.
Attends 100% mandatory hospital and department in-services. If not, in attendance is responsible for obtaining information covered.
Regularly reviews posted memos, notes, and in-services and signs forms promptly.
Maintains confidentiality and complies with HIPAA, always protecting patient privacy.
Establish a good rapport with physicians, physician offices, other hospital departments and has a good working relationship with laboratory co-workers.
Informs director of actual or anticipated problems to include staffing, performance, or patient related concerns.
Listens attentively and request clarification and/or feedback as indicated.
Supervises laboratory students.
If requested, will perform supervising and other reasonable management duties in absence of Manager/supervisor.
Will communicate any competency or proficiency needs to the department manager and take the initiative to obtain additional surgery training, on days off if necessary, as needed per individual technologist, to adequately perform job duties.

Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, enhances and extends the productivity of Clinical Laboratory Scientists by performing patient accommodative services including phlebotomy, specimen receipt, specimen processing and technical procedures as assigned; assumes other duties and responsibilities as directed by Supervisor.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Formal training which will probably be indicated by certification from an accredited medical assistant program; current CPR certification required; two years broad experience with emphasis in family practice. Prefer additional experience as a laboratory assistant/phlebotomist.
PHYSICAL GUIDELINES:
Physical guidelines include the ability to move, traverse, position self, remain in a stationary position and negotiate steps for up to eight hours per day; lift, move and transport patients, maneuver objects, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds; visual and auditory acuity; distinguish colors; motor coordination and manual dexterity; articulate speech; ability to read and understand orders, exposure to hazardous/bio-hazardous materials.
