At this time the Academy was sharing its building with Adelphi College, which was incorporated as a separate entry by the New York Regents on June 24, 1896.
The regents of the University of the State of New York established the charter for Adelphi University on June 24, 1896, and instruction began in September of that year.
The motto was introduced in the second seal with the foundation of the college in 1896.
Adelphi also claimed another first, this time on the national level with the establishment in 1904 of Kappa Sigma Epsilon, an honorary scholastic society for the secondary school.
In 1916, Adelphi was invited to join the national society Cum Laude.
In 1922, the school raised over one million dollars to expand the overcrowded facilities in Brooklyn.
A single Board of Trustees administered both institutions until 1925, when separate Boards were established.

In 1929, Adelphi University became the first private, coeducational institution of higher education on Long Island.
The school was originally located in Brooklyn; it moved to Garden City in 1929.
In 1938, the Dance Program was founded by the world-famous dancer Ruth St Denis.
In 1952, the first program for clinical psychology was established at the school; it was the forerunner to the Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies, now the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology.

In 1995, the Honors College was founded.
Adelphi faced a serious scandal in 1996, as the school celebrated its 100th anniversary.
Armas was a USISL All-Star for the Long Island Rough Riders and in 1996 was selected in the first round of the MLS Supplemental Draft by the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The men's lacrosse team has won seven national crowns, their last coming in 2001.
In 2003, Adelphi debuted a new and exciting educational program: Adelphi’s Project Succeed for College Bound Students with Special Needs.
The baseball team is currently led by former Yankees bullpen coach Dom Scala, who was named head coach in 2004.

The institution was awarded the 2010 Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
The university's School of Social Work is home to the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, which marks its 30th anniversary in 2010.
Armas returned to Garden City in 2011 to take the reigns of the women's soccer team as head coach.
In 2013, just their fourth year in the conference, the Panthers were awarded the 2013 Northeast-10 Presidents' Cup.
In 2013, Adelphi celebrated her 150th Anniversary and an incredibly innovative and shared history and partnership with her sister institution of higher education Adelphi University.
