The statistics group at UMass Amherst is a nexus of statistical research on a vibrant campus in the beautiful Pioneer Valley. UMass Amherst is eagerly expanding its statistics group, and we are looking to hire new colleagues who have demonstrated excellence in theoretical, methodological, and/or applied research in statistics and data science. Members of our statistics group collaborate with numerous fields, including applied mathematics, biostatistics, civil engineering, communication disorders, ecology, epidemiology, environmental science, food science, kinesiology, machine learning, microbiology, sociology, uncertainty quantification, and veterinary and animal sciences. Outstanding candidates in all areas of statistics, biostatistics, data science, and related fields are encouraged to apply. We are a vibrant and growing statistics group within a department of mathematics and statistics. We offer PhD and MS degrees, as well as an undergraduate track in statistics. We have a great deal of autonomy in running our statistics programs and strong collegial and collaborative relationships with our mathematics and applied mathematics colleagues, many of whom also have research interests related to statistics. We are an R1 research university with strong grant funding and a baseline teaching load of three semester courses per year, which can be reduced through research funding buyouts. It is common for new faculty to teach two semester courses per year for the first two years. Our tenure system faculty typically teach upper level undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics, with flexibility to create courses of our choosing. The Pioneer Valley is a wonderful place to live. UMass is also interested in helping to resolve two body problems. We have excellent benefits including a generous state pension system and parental leave program. Faculty contracts are collectively bargained via a union that is part of the Massachusetts Society of Professors. Requirements Applicants must present strong evidence of outstanding research accomplishments and promise in both research and teaching. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Mathematics, or a related field by the time of appointment. Salary Information It is expected that the salary range for this position is between $79,350 and $125,117. Please note: The low-end of the pay range in all faculty searches at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors, UMass Amherst/MTA/NEA. The high-end of the pay range reflects an increase above the median of salaries at this rank within the department for faculty who may have multiple years of faculty experience. The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend and offer of employment. Application Instructions Along with the application, please submit the following: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, description of research, a statement about teaching experience and interests, and three (3) letters of recommendation (at least one letter must also address the applicant's effectiveness as a teacher). Review of applications will begin on November 3, 2025 and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the position should be directed to the chair of the Search Committee, Professor John Staudenmayer, ******************. For additional information about the application process, contact David Rodriguez, **********************. Search committees may request these reflections within the cover letter, teaching or research statements, as appropriate.
