    Senior Naval Science Instructor Reports to: Principal Terms of Employment: 11 months FLSA Status: Nature of Work The Department Head of Naval Science at a school hosting an NJROTC program is called the Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI). The SNSI is the senior commissioned officer employed by the school. The Naval Service Training Command enforces stringent certification requirements on all personnel applying to the NJROTC program. School officials may not offer employment to an applicant who does not possess a valid NSTC certification. In order that the maximum coordination possible is achieved between the NJROTC unit and other academic departments, the staff of the Department of Naval Science shall be given full membership in the institution's faculty in appropriate ranks and be accorded the rights and privileges of faculty members. The SNSI is the Naval Science Department Head, and is accorded the same privileges as other host school department heads. The SNSI shall perform those duties pursuant to current regulations, policies, and procedures as established by NSTC and the host school. They may perform those collateral duties as may be reasonably assigned other department heads/teachers by the principal, providing such duties do not interfere with the administration and operation of the NJROTC program. In this regard, the SNSI, as the department head, is responsible for informing the principal in the event this situation occurs. Education and Experience The minimum education requirement for SNSIs is a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. Specific instructor qualification requirements will remain the decision of school officials who are the employers of these individuals. Certification and Licensure Requirements (if applicable): SNSI must posses a valid NSTC certification. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks 1. Directing the unit and advising school authorities on unit needs and program requirements 2. Teaching the prescribed 3 or 4-year Naval Science curriculum, including writing and updating lesson plans and performing other lesson preparation requirements 3. Instructing cadets in military drill 4. Ensuring the safety and well-being of cadets is observed at all times during cadets' participation in unit activities 5. Serving on routine faculty committees and performing curricular or extracurricular duties normally performed by, and rotated equitably among, other faculty members 6. Ensuring cadets are not discriminated against on any improper basis, notifying school authorities and taking immediate corrective action when it appears more likely than not that discrimination occurred 7. Counseling and mentoring students who participate in the program 8. Requiring cadets to conduct themselves in a military manner at all times when under instructor supervision (i.e., when attending Naval Science classes, drills, or on authorized field trips or orientation cruises) and that they observe military courtesies and traditions; 9. Providing guidance and information to cadets and other qualified students, including: NROTC and other military scholarships; USNA and other Service Academies; Advanced Navy and other service enlistment; Selecting a college or degree program; Completing college, financial aid, employment, and other applications; Meeting deadlines; Interview techniques and practice; Financial guidance; SAT/ACT preparation; and Tutoring 10. Ensuring cadets observe the Chain-of-Command and do not contact NSTC CD or other Navy officials directly unless authorized; 11. Ordering authorized government furnished equipment, (unless responsibility is given in writing to a separate military property custodian 12. Arranging for the cleaning and tailoring of cadet uniforms; 13. Evaluating the condition of cadet uniforms and other government property for repair or replacement; 14. Performing simple preventive maintenance of training aids and devices; 15. Ensuring proper accounting and physical security of all government furnished equipment/materials; 16. Planning extracurricular activities for the unit, such as color/honor guard ceremonies, academic, drill and marksmanship team competitive meets, field trips, basic leadership training camps and ship cruises 17. Preparing periodic reports on program administration and logistics; 18. Maintaining awareness of issues affecting, and organizational changes within, the Navy; 19. Assessing unit processes to ensure program objectives are met; 20. Attending Navy-sponsored training to keep abreast of program requirements and ensuring cadets are trained in accordance with current requirements; Taking courses to improve their teaching abilities and, for NJROTC instructors, meet all education requirements of 10 U.S.C. Secs. 2031 , 2032, and 2033, and any implementing regulations; Establishing a good working relationship with guidance counselors and faculty members; Making presentations to students at feeder schools at least annually to recruit new cadets into the program; Maintaining the unit's financial accounts and operating budget (see Chapter 17); For NJROTC only, preparing (and submitting if permitted by school officials) financial vouchers to the Navy for reimbursement to the host school or district of authorized expenditures in support of the NJROTC program; Establishing community support and recognition of the program; Informing the school and public of unit activities and achievements by making full use of school publications and local news media; Submitting to NSTC CD, via the Area Manager, as soon as possible, copies of news releases, transcripts, and/or narrative descriptions of radio and television broadcast of national interest; Informing NSTC CD, via the Area Manager, of instructors recognized as a Teacher of the Year/Month or receiving any other significant award, providing a biography, number of years as a unit instructor, name of award, name of school/district, number in competition, other relevant information, and, if applicable, last duty station, military retirement date, warfare qualifications; and Immediately informing school officials and NSTC CD, via the Area Manager, of any disciplinary actions against, and changes in, employment of instructors.     Responsible for providing effective instruction consistent with established objectives, effective advisement of students, accurate record keeping and reporting, and curriculum or course review and evaluation. will be posted until filled. Adjunct faculty are part-time, non-salaried faculty who are paid for each class taught and are hired on an as-needed basis. An adjunct job posting does not imply an open position exists at this time. The need for adjunct faculty changes from semester to semester and should be considered temporary in nature. * Provide effective learning experiences for students using a variety of teaching methods. * Give students at the beginning of each course a course outline which lists measurable learning objectives and expected outcomes of students and which follows the designated outline format of NCC. * Develop and submit up-to-date course outlines to the Department Chair and the Vice President prior to the course being taught. * Assess on a regular basis the success rate of students in each class taught, the retention and graduation rate of all advisees and submit this information to the respective department chair in May of each year. * Contact students who are absent from class. * Schedule regular student contact hours and post schedule prior to the end of the add period. * Serve as curriculum student advisor as assigned and verify readiness for graduation. * Maintain classroom environment and report problems in a timely manner. * Maintain shop and lab safety within current regulations. * Safeguard and keep accurate inventory of instructional and office equipment and report any irregularities to department chair. * Leave classrooms suitable for the next class. * Maintain accurate scholastic and membership records of students enrolled in classes and to submit reports according to the established schedule. * Furnish input to the Department Chair as to supply, textbook, resource, and equipment needs for instructional purposes. * Attend all scheduled faculty meetings unless there is a conflict with a scheduled class. * Participate in on going curriculum review and formal evaluation and implement necessary changes for improvement. * Stay abreast of changes in technology and obtain recognized certification(s) as required in identified software and/or hardware systems. * Recognize technology-based instructional methodologies * Instruct, as needed, on-line or technology based course(s) in keeping with the workload policy. * Use Web Attendance. * Participate in and support ongoing assessment, planning and evaluation to improve student learning.
