American District Telegraph (ADT) Founder Edward Callahan created a telegraph-based "call-box" to signal for assistance to a central office. It all started on April 5, 1874, with a nighttime break-in.
In 1874, 57 district telegraph delivery companies affiliated and became “American District Telegraph”. With the increase in telephone usage in the late 19th century, ADT’s messenger business slowly declined in popularity.
Snubbed by Western Union, Hubbard, who was already a successful businessman and lobbyist, decided to form his own company with other financial partners — giving Bell the position of Chief Electrician — in 1879: The National Bell Telephone Company.
The company underwent some organizational structure changes in 1909 when Western Union was acquired by AT&T, which led to the company focusing solely on the signal business.
Kozlowski was born in 1946, in a tenement building in Newark, New Jersey.
Moving slowly and quietly, by 1964 ADT acquired control of 80% of the US home security market.

He took a financial auditing job at SCM in New York, but moved to a small New Hampshire-based manufacturing company called Tyco in 1975 to work as an accountant.
The 1980’s saw the debut of the Unimode fire system, the CentraScan computer-based security system, and the Safewatch residential system.
1981: ADT launches SafeWatch, an advanced residential surveillance system.
Hawley was a group of diversified companies active in service and other industries, including the electronic security industry. It had begun building its North American security company holdings in 1981 with the purchase of Electro-Protective Corporation of America in 1981.
Subsequently, after the 1986 purchase of the Prichard Services company, Hawley had become the second largest business services company in the US.
At the end of 1987, the company sold its North American-based facility services business to Denmark’s ISS A/S.
Furthermore, ADT purchased Britannia Security Group PLC, an industry leader in the United Kingdom, in 1990.
By 1993, moreover, that base had multiplied to 477,000, representing a leading four percent share of the North American home security market.
Net income jumped similarly, to about $150 million in 1993.
1995: Western Resources purchases a 23 percent stake in ADT.
In 1996 it changed its name to ADT Security Services, Inc. and was relocated to Boca Raton, Fla.
In fact, the firm acquired Alert Centre for $93 million in 1996 and also landed a contract with HFS, a franchiser of hotels and real estate brokerage offices.
Indeed by 1996, ADT controlled ten percent of the electronic security market, a $6 billion industry.
In 1997, ADT was purchased by Tyco by means of a reverse takeover.
In 1998 it was acquired by Tyco International Ltd.
He even appeared on the cover of multiple business magazines and garnered the reputation as “the most aggressive CEO in America.” In 1999, his salary was $170 million.
1999: The Mobile Security Network system is launched.
Under the leadership of Tyco, a globally diverse manufacturing and service company with sales of nearly $30 billion, ADT averaged 75,000 new accounts per month in North America during 2000.
Mach-7 Security, based in Wisconsin, was purchased for over $3 million in 2000.
2000: QControl, a passenger screening system developed by ADT, is installed in Miami International Airport.
The firm also acquired SCANA Security in 2001 in a $24.5 million deal.
2001: ADT creates a Financial Services and Banking division to capture increased sales in the financial industry.
By 2002, Lord Ashcroft, still a non-executive director was fed up with the extravagant entitlements of top Tyco executives and recommended that the board of directors reign in the team.
In 2005, Kozlowski, along with former Tyco CFO Mark Swartz, was indicted on 38 felony counts of fraud and larceny from his time at Tyco.
In early 2010, Tyco International announced that it was acquiring Brink’s Home Security Holdings, (operating as Broadview Security) and was merging the company with its ADT brand name in a transaction valued at $2.0 billion.
In September 2011, Tyco announced it would split into three companies, ADT being one of the three.
On October 1, 2012, ADT debuted as an independent public company and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: ADT).
In 2014, ADT acquired the Canadian company Reliance Protectron Security Services.
In February 2016, Apollo Global Management acquired ADT for nearly $7 billion.
In January 2018, ADT once again went public through an IPO on the NYSE. The stock opened at over $12/share.
