ADT Security Services company history timeline

1874

In 1874, 57 district telegraph delivery companies affiliated and became “American District Telegraph”. With the increase in telephone usage in the late 19th century, ADT’s messenger business slowly declined in popularity.

1901

ADT incorporated into Western Union in 1901 and separated its messenger business from its main signaling business at that time.

1964

In 1964, ADT was found to be a monopoly in restraint of trade.

1969

ADT broke away from AT&T in 1969 and became a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange.

1981

1981: ADT launches SafeWatch, an advanced residential surveillance system.

Hawley was a group of diversified companies active in service and other industries, including the electronic security industry. It had begun building its North American security company holdings in 1981 with the purchase of Electro-Protective Corporation of America in 1981.

1987

At the end of 1987, the company sold its North American-based facility services business to Denmark’s ISS A/S.

In the early part of 1987, Hawley Goodall, owned by Lord Ashcroft bought the Indianapolis-based Crime Control Inc., the fourth-largest company in the United States security market, for $50 million.

1990

Furthermore, ADT purchased Britannia Security Group PLC, an industry leader in the United Kingdom, in 1990.

1993

Net income jumped similarly, to about $150 million in 1993.

1995

1995: Western Resources purchases a 23 percent stake in ADT.

1996

In fact, the firm acquired Alert Centre for $93 million in 1996 and also landed a contract with HFS, a franchiser of hotels and real estate brokerage offices.

Indeed by 1996, ADT controlled ten percent of the electronic security market, a $6 billion industry.

1998

ADT officially became part of Tyco's Fire and Security Services division in 1998.

1999

1999: The Mobile Security Network system is launched.

2000

Under the leadership of Tyco, a globally diverse manufacturing and service company with sales of nearly $30 billion, ADT averaged 75,000 new accounts per month in North America during 2000.

2000: QControl, a passenger screening system developed by ADT, is installed in Miami International Airport.

2001

The firm also acquired SCANA Security in 2001 in a $24.5 million deal.

2001: ADT creates a Financial Services and Banking division to capture increased sales in the financial industry.

2008

In 2008, Brink's had spun out its home security business, which accounted for 15% of Brink's revenue that year, into a separate publicly traded company.

2009

Brinks Home Security had rebranded as Broadview Security in 2009 with a massive advertising campaign.

2011

In September 2011, Tyco announced that it would split into three companies, ADT being one of the three.

2012

On October 1, 2012, ADT debuted as an independent public company and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: ADT).

2016

In February 2016, Apollo Global Management acquired ADT for nearly $7 billion and merged it with another home security firm, Protection 1.

2019

In October 2019, Telus Corporation purchased all of ADT's Canadian assets for $700 million.

2020

By September 2020, Telus had renamed ADT's Canadian assets to Telus SmartHome Security.
