Essential Job Duties
Provides reference and reader's advisory services to customers of all ages, both in person and via telephone and email.

Job Overview

Loss Accounting
Maintain loss and loss adjustment expense reserve calculations based on actuarial models and historical claim data and analyze such calculations to ensure our reserve position is accurately presented in the financials.

Position Summary
With a strong service orientation, the Public ServicesLibrarian conducts basic circulation activities, manages student workers, leads public relations efforts, assures seamless processing of incoming and outgoing OhioLINK items, provides patrons with research assistance, fulfills general building duties, and assists library staff with projects as needed. Please be aware that ODU is currently migrating our ILS to Alma with the guidance and support of OPAL and OhioLINK, so the duties outlined below will likely change with that migration.
Essential Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesCirculation Services
Works as part of a team with other staff members and student workers to provide high quality customer service at the Spangler Front Desk.
Assures continuous coverage of the Front Desk. If student workers are not available, the Public ServicesLibrarian fills in at the desk.
Conducts basic circulation activities such as answering the phone, checking out items to patrons, processing returns, assisting students in locating course reserves, answering directional questions, etc.
Supervises and assists in the maintenance of library stacks.
Processes replacement payments.
Communicates with OPAL and OhioLINK and keeps up on changes, updates, and troubleshooting that is related to the circulation system.
Library Student Workers
Assists with the hiring, scheduling, and training of student workers on operations, policies, and procedures of the Circulation Services unit.
Supervises student workers in general circulation functions, online library systems, and patron services.
Evaluates student worker performance and provides feedback and guidance to student workers when necessary.
Library Public Relations
Leads the Library PR team in all promotional events and communications that need to go out to the campus community.
Communicates building hours via library web page, signage, and Front Desk voicemail.
Creates signage, flyers, and displays about library events, news, celebrations, and more.
Maintains regular updates to the library's social media sites.
OhioLINK
Assures seamless processing of incoming and outgoing OhioLINK items. Supervises student workers in the processing OhioLINK items. In the absence of student workers, the Public ServicesLibrarian processes OhioLINK items.
Guides and assists student workers in the planning, strategizing, and assessment of OhioLINK processing, statistics, label creation, supply use, and potential issues.
Reference Services
Assists patrons with research needs, remotely (via phone, chat, and e-mail) and in-person.
Conducts in-depth research appointments with patrons.
Stays abreast of reference assignment alerts.
Works on reference projects, such as constructing and editing research guides and tutorials.
Spangler Learning Center Building
Collaborates with Spangler Learning Center building staff to ensure its efficient operation.
Follows pre-determined procedures for opening and/or closing Spangler Learning Center.
Monitors the behavior of patrons utilizing the building to prevent theft and/or destruction of materials and equipment.
Works with ODU Public Safety when there is a safety concern, building issue, emergency, or patrons that need assistance (escorts, lost and found, etc.).
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
A Master's degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
Experience with library systems and general computer software, such as MS Office.
Experience assisting patrons with research using online catalogs, the internet, and research databases.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
Ability to work as a team member to establish agreed upon goals and to share a common purpose that is service oriented.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Strong organizational skills.
Willingness to work in a changing environment to meet the needs of library patrons.
Physical Demands
Routine physical demands for an office environment.
Frequent standing or walking.
Sitting at a desk or in meetings for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift/move up to 25lbs.
Operate all computer equipment, copier, printer, telephone, calculator, etc.
Additional Information

The Youth Librarian creates, implements, and presents department and community programs for youth and youth-related programs for parents, caregivers, and teachers. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Plans and conducts programs for youth to encourage engagement with Library resources.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
* Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science.
* Knowledge of youth customer interests related to Library materials, programs, and services.
* Skill in customer service.
* Ability to plan and conduct programs for youth and family audiences.
* Ability to work independently and with coworkers in a wide variety of situations with minimal supervision.
* Ability to use all technology applicable to the essential functions of the job and commonly used by the Library.
* Lifting objects up to 50 pounds and carrying them short distances [50 feet or less] is required. Pushing carts of library materials up to 150 pounds is required.
* Working irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, is required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Education: Master's degree in Library and Information Science is required.
* Certifications or licensure: A driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the Library's insurance provider are required.
* Years of relevant experience: Two or more years is preferred.
* Years of experience supervising: None.

About the Position:
As an AdultServicesLibrarian, you will provide customer service, in-depth reference assistance, specialized training and programming, and reading recommendations. You will train and guide staff and customers in the use of research databases, community resources, digital resources, and reference tools. Additionally, you may serve as the Collection Lead for the location, working with Collection Services to manage and merchandise materials.
Position Schedule
Combination of mornings, afternoons, evenings & weekends
Friday/Saturday rotation 9:00am - 6:00pm
1 out of 5 Sundays 1:00pm - 5:00pm
What You'll Do:
Proactively provides a high level of customer service and assists customers through various aspects of utilizing the library, including expert level reference service in person, over the phone, by email and chat.
Initiates the development, implementation, and promotion of adult programs to increase awareness of library resources.
Provides readers' advisory to customers (in person and virtually) using appropriate sources of information including knowledge of the collection, the publishing industry, and relevant resources.
Evaluates and provides feedback on the location's collection and leads collection management and visual merchandizing activities based on knowledge of the community needs, usage levels, and relevance of materials.
Constructs and applies a detailed approach to training for customers and staff on the use of library resources (print and digital) and/or community resources. Models the use of such resources.
Adds expertise to system-level information and community resource training for staff.
Promotes the library through community outreach, relationship building and information sharing.
May be the location liaison for Life Skills, working with the Library's Life Skills Program Leader and community members to understand and meet the needs of adult customers, particularly in the areas of social services and job help.
Supervises volunteers and/or practicum students/interns.
May participate and present at local, state, and national conferences.
Assumes responsibility for the operation of the location in the absence of a manager.
Performs additional duties as assigned including being a project lead and/or serving on task forces, committees, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's of Library and Information Science Degree from ALA accredited institution of higher learning required.
1-3 years' experience working with the public required.
Ability to use appropriate judgment in handling information and records.
Ability to work independently with limited direction.
Acts with the customer in mind using information gained from interacting with the customers. Meets the expectations and requirements of external and internal customers.
Ability to effectively present in a variety of formal settings - one on one, group, peers, direct reports, etc. Command attention and manage group process.
Ability to operate library technology including personal computer, email, software programs (i.e., Windows/Microsoft Office) and other job-related equipment and systems.
Ability to utilize reliable transportation to promptly report to job assignment and other locations, per job requirements.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences or commercial vehicles (e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, and/or working in moderate outdoor weather conditions).
Work requires occasional lifting or pushing of up to 50 lbs. and the frequent lifting or pushing of up to 20 lbs.
