According to RV historians, 1910 is cited as the birth of the RV industry with the invention of “auto campers” and “camping trailers.” Up until that point, people traveled by train – basically, an RV on a track.

The first RV prototypes were later refined in 1915 with the creation of the gypsy van.

But the first group of RV enthusiasts formed in 1919, known as the “Tin Can Tourists.” The name comes from an old trick of the trade that consisted of welding tin cans to the radiators of RVs to warm up food.

The 1928 Ford Model A House Car: The Ford Model A House Car emerged during the Great Depression as a solution for people who could not keep both their house and their car.

One of the most famous manufacturers of travel trailers, Airstream, was founded in 1929 when Wally Byam attached a tear drop-shaped structure on a model T chassis.

By 1932, Airstream trailers were being mass produced and sold commercially for $500-1000.

By 1936 the Covered Wagon was the largest trailer produced in the American industry.

The company got its start with RVs in 1941, when they started producing travel trailers that could be used for mobile military housing.

In fact, in 1942, the US military purchased thousands of one type of revolutionary trailers known as the “Palace Expando” to house newly enlisted men and their families.

The 1949 Airfloat Land Yacht: With iconic yacht-style round windows, The Airfloat Land Yachts were so popular that many celebrities — even James Dean — owned one.

For example, the executive flagship RV was built in 1952.

The 1961 Trailorboat: The 1961 Trailorboat — one of the most unique pieces in the Volo Auto Museum Vintage Camper exhibit — is very rare, and only about 200 were produced.

In 1962, the novel Travels with Charley, written by John Steinbeck, ushered in a new love for camping as the story was based on a camper who traveled the country in search of adventure.

One of the largest international organizations for RV ownership is the Good Sam Club, and it was founded in 1966.

He then found himself looking for work and purchased a camper company in 1969 with five employees.

KZ got its start building truck campers in 1972, quickly added Sportsmen® travel trailers to the lineup, and has never looked back.

The first Airstream motorhome was launched in 1979 and has captured the attention of road trippers since.

After experiencing a period of growth and success Erdman decided in 1983 to make James an offer to purchase the company.

James in early 1988 decided it was time to alter the course of the company and divide into two distinct ventures.

In 2010, the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association celebrated 100 years of RV history.

Camping: According to a 2019 camping report, camping is more popular than ever before, with more than 78 million Americans considering themselves campers.
