Job Description AECOM has a position available for a Senior Transportation Engineer in our Virginia Beach, Virginia office. The growing transportation department for roadway and structural design is looking for an experienced individual who has a strong background with various transportation projects. Projects may include city and county localities, state transportation agencies and federal agencies such as USACE and NAVFAC. In this role the Civil Engineer will perform transportation engineering tasks including design of highways, streets, lighting, ITS, traffic signals, signing, pavement markings, right of way, traffic control plans, specifications, estimates, public involvement, fieldwork, construction phase services, transportation systems, drainage structures, surface hydrology, sewers, tunnels and bridge structures. Research, design and construction of fixed works. The responsibilities of this role include, but may not be limited to, the following: Perform engineering activities to support planning, designing, construction, maintenance, inspection and alteration of highways, bridges, tunnels, and transportation system projects. Estimating, scheduling and determining feasibility based on analysis of maps/aerial photographs, terrain, hydrology, geology, traffic studies and environmental impact studies. Senior technical resource may serve as technical advisor for team. Provides specialized technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise. Develops study and design procedures to facilitate high-quality cost-effective work by others. Participates in discipline and interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables. Develops construction cost estimates and estimates of technical efforts for projects. Uses expertise in all steps of completing discipline component of PS&E package. Performs quality control review of design calculations or drawings. Prepares technical specification sections. Provides input to the development of engineering budget and schedule to meet requirements. Prioritize and schedule work activities, provide oral and written instructions. Communicate verbally and in writing in English with staff, clients and public. Assist with on-site roadway, bridge and tunnel inspection services when requested. Qualifications Minimum Requirements BA/BS + 6 years of recent, relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education. Current Virginia Professional Engineer license Previous staff management experience Experience planning, design, inspection and modification phases of projects. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite of applications, Bentley MicroStation, Openroads and ProjectWise software applications. Experience with AASHTO and VDOT transportation design policies and guidelines. Valid US Driver's License required, as a condition of employment must pass AECOM's Motor Vehicle Records review. Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required. Our SSP program operates 7 days a week, 365 days per year, serving a critical role in the delivery of safety and mobility to the motoring public. As this is a 24/7/365 operation center, schedules are dictated by operational need and stated in advance and will include on call duties. Schedules may vary and individuals selected will be required to successfully complete certification training. The responsibilities of the SSP include, but are not limited to: Establishing temporary traffic control for emergency responders and providing scene assistance. Detecting incidents and disruptions in traffic. Clearing obstructions and debris from the roadway. Support reversible roadway and high-occupancy vehicle gate and tunnel operations to ensure safe and incident-free lane change functions. ERO ONLY The Safety Service Patrol also offers help to individual motorists, including: Tire change assistance. Fuel to get to the nearest gas station. Jump starts. Water for overheating radiators. Phone access to call tow / recovery services. Directions. To ensure safety, Safety Service Patrol operators are provided with special highly visible, reflective uniforms and drive specially marked vehicles. Qualifications Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma and or equivalent certificate (GED) or 1 year of relevant work experience in lieu of education. Be a minimum of 18 years of age. Ability to drive, using an AECOM provided vehicle, patrolling and monitoring a segment of interstate roadway in an assigned region. Must pass a State and Federal criminal history/security background check; must also successfully complete Virginia Department of Transportation fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC). Possess a valid Driver's License and a clean driving record in the last 3 years, including no suspension of license or single violation that the department of motor vehicle treats as worth 6 demerits. Employees must also participate in monthly MVR monitoring program and maintain a satisfactory driving record as a condition of employment. Required Qualifications * BS in Civil or Environmental Engineering (other disciplines may be considered) * 10+ years of experience in water/wastewater discipline - as a W/WW Engineer and/or Project Manager, designing (study, plans and specifications) municipal water/wastewater treatment and collection/distribution projects; * PE license in VA is required, or ability to receive in 6 months; * Progressive experience in the evaluation, design, permitting and construction administration of water/wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, water storage and distribution facilities and wastewater collection systems; * Demonstrated project management experience, including budget and schedule monitoring and control responsibilities; * Experienced in client relations and business development; * Leader and team player possessing strong planning and organizational skills; * Local client experience is preferred but not required; * Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to conduct effective client presentations and written report preparation Preferred Qualifications: * Master's Degree preferred. ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY The TOC in Virginia Beach, VA houses a 24/7/365 program that delivers incident management, dispatching, and traveler information services on Virginia's roadways. AECOM operations staff serve at the TOC facility on shifts to continuously respond to changing traffic conditions and impacts to traffic flow and safety through direct communication with first responders, VDOT staff, Virginia State Police (VSP) and mobility stakeholders of VDOT. The routine responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to: TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Use software and applications to control and monitor various Intelligent Transportation Systems devices located along freeways, such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, dynamic message signs (DMS), and Highway Advisory Radios (HAR) located on the interstate infrastructure. Monitor camera video and other information sources for the detection and verification of events that impact traffic flow and safety, such as motorist assists, traffic crashes, debris removal, abandoned vehicles, stalled vehicles, maintenance activity, and construction activity.
