Gaspar Felix Tournachon, more commonly known as “Nadar,” is credited with taking the first successful aerial photograph in 1858 from a hot air balloon tethered 262 feet over Petit-Bicêtre (now Petit-Clamart), just outside Paris; his original photos have been lost.
By 1882, British meteorologist E.D. Archibald discovered the idea of surveying an area from above without sending a human to the skies.
Born in England in 1897, J. Victor Dallin's family emigrated to Canada when he was eight years old.
In 1903, German engineer Alfred Maul demonstrated a gunpowder rocket that, after reaching 2,600 feet in just eight seconds, jettisoned a parachute-equipped camera that made photos during its descent.
The company compiled the first aerial survey map of Philadelphia in the 1920s.
Dallin, uncertain about the future of Aero Service, left to form the Dallin Aerial Survey Company in 1924.
He relocated his company first to Clementon, New Jersey but returned in 1926 to the Island Road airfield, which had been renamed the Philadelphia Municipal Airport.
The company shut down in 1939 soon after three of Dallin's staff joined the armed forces.
