1968

The seventh startup of ten he’s founded since 1968, it sold flowers online and was the first brand in history to have an affiliate program.

1989

In 1989, he was the one who holds the proud title of the world’s first internet marketer.

Our story starts in 1989: the fall of the Berlin Wall, Madonna singing “Like A Prayer” and a man by the name of William J. Tobin.

His eCommerce site went live in 1989 and then launched a novel marketing approach called ‘Prodigy Network’ soon after.

1994

Meanwhile, in 1994, CDNOW launched their BuyWeb program.

In 1994, a programmer named Lou Montulli created the cookies, which was another milestone for affiliate marketing.

1996

Amazon only sold books back then.In 1996, the company was only one year old and its initial public offering (IPO) was still a year off in its future.

Amazon were latecomers to the party, arriving in 1996 with their associates program.

The program was so successful that Tobin decided to patent the idea in 1996.

As with any ecommerce innovation, Amazon was not far behind. It launched Amazon Associates in 1996, which became a template for brands to launch their own affiliate programs and remains a key player in the affiliate world today.

1997

With affiliate networks springing up all over the place, in 1997 Refer-it.com was launched by Wayne Marciano.

2000

During the commercial rise of the Internet, the rage of online business ventures that had been built came crashing down in early 2000.

2001

In 2001 dot.com created significant changes in affiliate marketing.

2003

In 2003, Missy Ward and Shawn Collins founded Affiliate Summit, which aimed to educate those involved with affiliate marketing on the latest industry updates and issues and foster a productive networking environment for affiliate marketers.

2005

In fact, it’s reported that in 2005, GBP£1.35 billion in sales was generated via affiliate marketing in the UK alone.

2006

By 2006, affiliate networks were reported to be turning in approximately £2.16 billion in the UK alone, with worldwide revenues estimated to have reached $6.5 billion.

2007

Since launch in 2007, Skimlinks has scaled into a genuine commerce platform with various solutions to help publishers earn even more from affiliate.

2012
