1889

Agnes Scott College was established in 1889 with a distinctive mission: to educate women for the betterment of their families and the elevation of their region.

Since 1889, Agnes Scott has been empowering students to think deeply, live honorably and engage the intellectual and social challenges of their time.

The college was founded in 1889 as Decatur Female Seminary by Presbyterian minister Frank Henry Gaines.

1890

In 1890, the name was changed to Agnes Scott Institute to honor the mother of the college's primary benefactor, Col.

1907

In 1907 it became the first accredited college or university in Georgia.

1926

Agnes Scott has been a member of Phi Beta Kappa since 1926 and has also been a founding member of many national and regional educational associations.

2013

Winner of two 2013 Emmy Awards from the Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences

2018

The ninth and current president since July 2018 is Leocadia I. Zak, who previously worked as director of the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).
