Shedd added sea otters to the collection in 1989, a first among the continent's inland aquariums.
The man credited as the driving force behind the creation of the Oceanarium, William Braker, retired at the end of 1993.
In 1994, Ted Beattie became the aquarium's fourth director.
The Caribbean Reef would be revamped in 1999.
The additions under his watch include the Amazon Rising exhibit in 2000.
In 2001, annual aquarium attendance grew to nearly 2 million.
