In 1890 122 births of the forms Ahern/Aherne were recorded, principally in counties Cork and Limerick, while 15 of the form Hearne/Herne/Hearn were noted, mainly in Co.

In 1921, John F. assumed control and incorporated the company, which he renamed John F. Ahern Co.

AX Transportation is part of the Ahern Family of Companies that began in 1953 from humble beginnings as a gas station truck stop and landscape equipment rental shop on the site where the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, now stands.

In 1958, they sold the service station so they could focus on rental equipment.

By 1970 they expanded yet again, opening Ahern Renter’s Center in the historic Westside of Las Vegas where much of the local rental business remains today.

Ahern began to climb the ranks of nationally recognized mechanical contractors, reaching number 65 in Domestic Engineering magazine’s 1978 "Book of Giants" – reporting annual sales of $13.4 million.

Ahern formed its Fire Protection Division in 1981, and began fabricating piping for external projects the following year.

Due to increased demand, the business would be relocated and expanded throughout Southern Nevada and Southern California by 1983.

In 1999, Don purchased a forklift manufacturer in Oregon called Western Attachment Company.

After investing in an engineering team and relocating the business to Las Vegas, Nevada, Don launched Xtreme Manufacturing™ in 2003.

In October of 2013, Don expanded his involvement in equipment manufacturing and drew on his experience with high-reach equipment when Xtreme Manufacturing™ acquired a 51% stake in Snorkel™, a global manufacturer of aerial work platforms.

Building upon the success of Ahern Rentals, and his other companies, Don Ahern founded AX Transportation in the spring of 2016.
