AIDA Cruises company history timeline

1990

After the reunification of Germany in the early 1990’s Deutsche Seereederei was privatised and became DSR. DSR acquired Seetours of Bremen and cruises were marketed under the name Seetours.

1998

On 1 January 1998, DSR split their operations into cargo and tourism, with a new company Arkona Touristik taking over the cruise business.

2000

Then during 2000 a company was formed, known as AIDA Cruises; with P&O Cruises acquiring a 51% stake in the new organisation, and Arkona Touristik retaining the other 49%.

2001

In 2001, P&O Princess Cruises acquired the remaining 49% interest in AIDA and the cruise business associated with Seetours International.

2003

In 2003, P&O Princess merged with Carnival Corporation, to form Carnival Corporation & plc, the world's largest cruise holiday company.

2004

The Seetours cruise business, that had been acquired by P&O, was rebranded as AIDA Cruises in 2004.

2006

AIDA Cruises reaches the magical mark of one million passengers, with Karlheinz Zahm from Leonberg checking in on AIDAaura as the one millionth guest on 25 Aug 2006.

2007

The ship will be replaced by the first newbuilding which will be put into service in spring of 2007.

After ordering a total of four newbuildings from the Meyer Shipyard in Papenburg, AIDA Cruises announces that the AIDAblu will be leaving the German market in the spring of 2007 and relocating to the affiliated company Ocean Village in Great Britain.

2012

AIDAmar was inaugurated on the evening of May 12, 2012 with an extravaganza at the Port of Hamburg, accompanied by her three sister ships.

2013

On the 8th of Oktober 2013 the name of the first ship of the new AIDA Generation, AIDAprima, is announced in Hamburg.

It will be built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, with delivery scheduled for 2013.

2015

AIDA Cruises is now one of ten brands owned by Carnival Corporation & plc, based at Miami, Florida, accounting for 6.5% of its share of revenue and has been led by President Felix Eichhorn since 1 September 2015.

2016

Emma Schweiger christens AIDAprima on May 7, 2016 in the framework of the 827th HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY. From April 30, the hanseatic city will be the start and end port for seven-day round trips to Western Europe's most beautiful metropolises such as London, Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam.

2017

In October 2017, AIDAcara departed from Hamburg on the company's first World Cruise.

2018

On 8 October 2018 AIDAaura left Hamburg on the company's second World Cruise, the 117-day voyage visited 41 ports in 20 countries on four continents.

2019

AIDA Cruises expands its fleet by another ship in 2019.

2020

P&O Cruises (UK) has a fleet of five ships with a new ship, Iona being launched in 2020; combining genuine service, a sense of occasion and attention to detail; and ensuring passengers have the holiday of a lifetime, every time.
