AIPAC company history timeline

1980

In 1980, Thomas Dine became the executive director of AIPAC, and developed its grassroots campaign.

1982

So began a three-decade cycle, one that did not end until Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon, in which American Jews closed ranks to support Israel regardless of circumstances.

In 1982, activists affiliated with AIPAC in Skokie, Illinois backed Richard J. Durbin to oust United States Representative Paul Findley (R-Illinois), who had shown enthusiasm for PLO leader Yasir Arafat.

1984

In 1984, Senator Charles H. Percy (R-Illinois), then-chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a supporter of a deal to allow Saudi Arabia to buy sophisticated Airborne early warning and control (AWAC) military planes was defeated by Democrat Paul Simon.

1988

Hamas Charter- 1988- with introduction- Hamas doctrine is crystal clear: Israel has absolutely no right to exist.

1998

The 1998 foreign aid appropriation bill contained $3 billion for Israel.

2001

Following the september 11th attacks in 2001, AIPAC has stepped up its agenda to make sure that the United States continues to ensure Israel's security by working with Congress to isolate and financially constrict such groups as Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

2003

Through its Web site, the organization also kept its members updated on protective measures taken by the Israeli people as the United States initiated war with Iraq in 2003.

2005

In 2005, Lawrence Franklin, a Pentagon analyst pleaded guilty to espionage charges of passing United States government secrets to AIPAC policy director Steven Rosen and AIPAC senior Iran analyst Keith Weissman, in what is known as the AIPAC espionage scandal.

2009

Rosen and Weissman were later fired by AIPAC. In 2009, charges against the former AIPAC employees were dropped.
