Sleep Disorder
+ A sleep technician trainee develops competency in and performs basic sleep testing procedures and interventions. The sleep technician trainee works under the direction of a registered sleep technologist. Please note that this is a trainee position and that the incumbent will be learning all procedures under the direct supervision of a registered sleep technologist. Job Description
Under the direction of the Laboratory Service Supervisor, participate in daily operations of the blood bank, performing Clinical Laboratory tests, analyzes and interprets test results, assisting with communication of test results to patients, physicians and employees, and ensures accuracy. Uses technical competencies and judgment to respond and handle situations as they arise. Assists with the Laboratory PI program, ordering of supplies, developing procedures and other areas as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Follows St. Joseph Medical Center's HIPAA guidelines to prevent unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
Promotes a culture of safety through proper patient identification, incident reporting, and non-punitive documentation practices.
Provides technical and regulatory oversight for all CLIA specialties, including transfusion services (blood bank).
Supervises and performs high-complexity testing, including blood bank procedures, ensuring accuracy and reliability of results.
Verifies that patient results are released only when all laboratory systems, including blood bank equipment, are functioning properly.
Oversees documentation and review of quality control, proficiency testing, and corrective actions across all testing areas.
Manages staff training, orientation, scheduling, and ongoing competency assessments, ensuring team readiness and compliance.
Supports operational efficiency through supply management, equipment maintenance, and coordination of repairs.
Assists the Laboratory Manager with staffing decisions, productivity monitoring, and performance evaluations.
Leads or participates in quality improvement initiatives, education efforts, and interdepartmental collaboration involving blood product usage.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Proficient in routine and specialized laboratory procedures relevant to Blood Bank and clinical lab testing.
Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
Demonstrates flexibility, initiative, and the ability to adapt to changing workloads and work under stress in order to perform effectively in the position under stress.
Maintains professionalism and accuracy under stress or in high-demand situations.
Basic computer knowledge; LIS and HIS
Technical, critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills relevant to this area in order to effectively communicate with physicians, health team members, and patients and their families.
Multilingual skills preferred but not required.

1 years' experience as a Blood Bank Medical Technologist.
Completion of an Associates (2-year degree) or Bachelors (4-year degree) in medical technology, Biology or related science and successful completion of a CAAHEP approved program in Medical Technology.
Certification as a Medical Technologist, CLS (NCA) or MT (ASCP) or Certification as a Specialist in Blood Bank SBB (ASCP).
For ASCP certification after 2004, must maintain active credential status to maintain employment.
For AMT certification, must maintain active credential status to maintain employment.
Recent graduates from approved programs within the last 6 months must be certified within 12 months after hire.

Under the general supervision of Laboratory Technical Specialist and/or Laboratory Director, performs a wide variety of complex clinical laboratory tests and procedures according to established standards; maintains equipment and monitors quality control and instrument/test performance. Confirms and verifies results through an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, instrumentation and quality control review.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Performs clinical procedures by established protocols in order to provide accurate diagnosis data. Samples are accurately identified and labeled. Results are evaluated and questionable results are repeated and/or investigated. May rotate to various lab sections and performs clinical duties in a competent manner according to established procedures.
Routinely completes assigned work on time. Completes STAT requests within defined turnaround times. Critical values and issues are called to the appropriate healthcare provider.
Provides quality Customer Service in a timely and courteous manner.
Check inventory and rotates supplies; restocks supplies as necessary.
Recognizes limitations/resourcefulness of their competency within the realm of the job description.
Effectively interacts with Laboratory personnel from all departments to resolve routine issues.

Qualifications
Educational / Minimum requirements:
BS in Medical Technology (MT) or Bachelor's in Chemical, Physical or Biological Sciences; experience in a clinical laboratory preferred. One (1) year minimum experience in Microbiology preferred.
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
ASCP Certification strongly preferred.
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.
Physical Requirements:
Walking, standing, sitting, bending required. Must work under the stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands requiring accuracy. Position requires ability to constantly lift light objects less than 20 lbs., perform moderately difficult manipulative skills, arm-hand steadiness, and hand-eye coordination skills; walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods; see objects closely and hear normal sounds with some background noises.
Work Environment:
Employee may frequently be exposed to blood, body tissues and/or fluids, chemical fumes and hazardous waste materials. Proper PPE is supplied by the employer.
Cognitive Requirements:
Position requires ability to concentrate on moderate detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time. Individual must be able to understand and relate to the concept behind specific ideas and remember multiple tasks given to self and others over long periods of time, able to communicate verbally, using advanced level vocabulary.
