Employee Performance Coordinator Julie Rakestraw sat down with us at Zippia to explain why the Alamance Regional Medical Center company culture is so inviting.

    Joy at Work

    Unique Ways to Thank Employees

The Joy at Work subcommittee that Alamance Regional formed is made up of highly engaged employees who want to make a difference in the company culture. These exceptional employees will host some type of "Caring for You" event every other month or every quarter.

Once, the subcommittee handed out free carnations to every employee along with a note. The note started, "You bring me joy..." and the employees would write a personalized noted to another employee, leader or physician explaining why they brought them joy. Some thanked fellow coworkers for covering a shift while others thanked each other for the care they provided patients.

Every Valentine's Day the Joy at Work subcommittee hands out big hearts with the intention of thanking someone for making a difference. It's definitely not a thankless job at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

    Giving Back

A Culture of Caring for Others

The employees at Alamance are all heavily involved in giving back to the community they serve, which provides a culture that is very rewarding.

Every year they host a Salvation Army Angel Tree to provide a happy holiday season for children in their community. In addition, they partner with the Chamber of Commerce to put on the annual fall backpack program to provide school supplies to children and teens who don't have the means to buy the supplies.

It truly is a community of giving back at the medical center because so many of the employees get involved in the community service events. This year, they hosted the first ever Snowflake Stroll to honor breast cancer survivors. They were expecting 30 people to show up for the first time event. "We had over 200 people show up. We were just blown away," Rakestraw said.

In addition to many other service events, the medical center also hosts a Black-and-White Ball every year for its board members, community, and hospital employees and leaders. Six people are chosen to be the "Belle of the Ball." From May through September, they try to raise the most funds to be named the Belle.

While this event is set up to raise money to be put back into the hospital's cancer center, it's also a night for the employees to let their hair down. Everyone wears black and white, except for the six Belles who get to wear a color of their choosing. They are served dinner and then dance the night away. Past balls have been held at country clubs and on farms, but every year it's at a different location.

    Spirited Culture

    Spicing up the Uniform

Several days throughout the year, Alamance Regional employees have the option to wear something other than their day-to-day uniform. Quarterly, they have a spirit week. During that week, each day is different. From pajama day to sports day, the employees are encouraged to get creative with their outfits.

When it's Halloween time, the employees have yet again another opportunity to dress up in costume. Then during Christmas time, they get to wear tacky sweaters on special days throughout the season.

"We know you spend more time here than you do at home, so we want you to have fun at work," Rakestraw said.
