Work Shift
Day (United States of America) Job Summary: Must be skilled in collection and processing of all laboratory specimens for testing and able to perform waived testing under direct supervision. Performs a variety of pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical tasks in the laboratory. Aids in supervisory activity for a lab section. Evaluates specimen acceptability, enters patient and test information into the computer and responds to requests for information from customers. Utilizes all necessary computer systems, proficient at reviewing documentation or accuracy. Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions: Collects and receives samples for testing into the laboratory, verifies proper patient preparation sample collection, and sample transport requirements. Ensures Standard Precautions and personal protective equipment are utilized for collecting and processing of all types of specimens. Demonstrates good verbal, non-verbal, written, and electronic communication skills. Responsible for effective communications between the laboratory, clinical services and physicians. Leads quality, lean and process improvement activities. Clerical assistance for billing, troubleshooting, data gathering, and verification of lab orders and labels. Reviews and utilizes all necessary computer systems and documentation for accuracy and an efficiently solves problems for assigned section. Sets up and assists with office surgeries and procedures including but not limited to: injections, US injections, C-arm injections and fracture closed reductions, podiatric office procedures. Works closely with provider, nurse and other staff to ensure quality patient care. Fits patients with boots, braces and other DME items as ordered by the provider. Cast and splint application and removal. Dressing changes and applications, suture and staple removal. Provides patient education specific for the item. Prepares injections. Obtains all lab, imaging, op note and office visits from outside facilities. Places orders for physical therapy, imaging, lab work, etc. as ordered by the provider. Works closely with the provider, nursing and other staff to ensure quality patient care. Ensure patient confidentiality Other duties as assigned. Train other ortho tech staff to ensure competency with rooming process, fitting and dispensement of DME, applying and removing casts. Compliance with HIPAA, OSHA and Red Flag rules. Responsibilities
Rooming patients: Collecting pertinent information regarding the patient's chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and medication reconciliation upon arrival for a patient visit. Administer medications per the provider order. Provide assistance with prescription medication refills per department protocols. Call medications into pharmacies, notify patients of refills, and documents actions within the EMR per provider orders. Provides Patient Care: Accurately measures and records height, weight vital signs (temp, pulse, respiration, BP). Completes medication reconciliation. Administers Vaccinations. Assists providers with procedures and treatment. Performs audiometry, spirometry, respiratory mask fits, EKGs and phlebotomy. Performs ear washes and dressing changes. Performs a variety of routine and complex blood drawing procedures including but not limited to venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures.Ensure quality by verifying patient identification and specimen labeling.Maintains appropriate response times to stat and timed orders.Serves as part of the trauma and code response teams.Six (6) months phlebotomy experience or completion of the Carle Phlebotomy in Training Program.The Hospital Phlebotomy team services the patients at Carle Foundation Hospital. This team serves patients from newborn to geriatric in the Emergency Department and all inpatient and outpatient areas of the hospital. The Hospital Phlebotomy team works closely with a variety of healthcare professionals to collect blood specimens for diagnostic testing. The Hospital Phlebotomy team collects blood from approximately 400 patients each 24-hour period. Hospital Phlebotomists work every other weekend and 3-4 holidays per year and cover 1-2 call shifts each week. Patients and specimens are identified using two identifiers: Name/Date of Birth or Name/Medical Record Number. Venipunctures are performed using a vacutainer needle and hub, a hypodermic needle with syringe, or a butterfly needle system. Complex blood drawing procedures include a variety of specialized blood collection kits for commercial laboratories and/or research. Blood cultures collected at Carle require Chloroprep skin decontamination at the draw site and vary from collection of a simple tube collection for Acid Fast or Fungal cultures, a set of Bactec blood culture bottles, or involve nurse coordination for a single or multiple-lumen port collection. The inpatient and Emergency Department expectations for response times are that STAT tests will be collected within 15 minutes of order and TIMED tests will be collected within a 30 minute window of time around the specified collection time (up to 15 minutes before or 15 minutes after the time indicated). Phlebotomists collect initial blood specimens for all patients classified as a Trauma. Successfully participates in all accreditation and other proficiency testing and annual performance competencies in each of the clinical laboratory testing areas. Participates in re-education or re-training as needed to ensure successful completion of all Proficiency and competency testing. Follows and maintains familiarity with laboratory and organizational policies and procedures. Reviews and records documentation of review as required. Complete Continuing Education as required by Lab policy and to maintain certification if applicable. Communicates information with internal and external customers as appropriate in an accurate, timely, effective and professional manner. Phlebotomists must demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

The Phlebotomist draws blood samples to be used for diagnostic testing and transports samples to the appropriate laboratory. Provides updates to the patient areas on results of the tests. Performs appropriate CLIA waived routine tests or procedures in a clinical laboratory.
Responsibilities
Gathers specimens, samples, or supplies and makes basic preparations in a clinical lab environment.
Uses various venipuncture methods to collect patient blood samples and transports samples to the lab.
Evaluates positive patient identification reducing pre-analytical error and/or adverse patient outcome.
Tracks progress on samples and work orders and provides updates on results to patient areas.
Cleans and performs routine maintenance on work areas and equipment and documents equipment performance accurately.
Requirements, Preferences and Experience
Education
Minimum : Skill in communicating clearly and effectively using standard English in written, oral and verbal format to achieve high productivity and efficiency. Skill to write legibly and record information accurately as necessary to perform job duties.
Experience
Preferred : Hospital phlebotomy experience.
Special Skills
Minimum : Basic computer literacy.
Training
