Aleut company history timeline
The Aleut Corporation was incorporated on June 21, 1972 as one of the 12 Alaska Native corporations established under ANCSA. The Aleut Corporation received a settlement of $19.5M, entitlement to 70,789 acres of surface lands, and 1.572 million acres of subsurface state.
In November 1972, after almost a year, a new TAC Board of Directors was formally elected, and while Michael Swetzof and Lillie McGarvey stayed on to serve additional terms, Osterback, Philemonof, and Hoff rotated off the board.
All five of the founding board members were under the age of 30 and found themselves in an opportune moment, as spectators to and participants in history. It is that context which underscores the arrival of the Reeve Aleutian Airways flight into Shemya that winter day in early 1972.
Commercial fur seal harvesting, first for Russians and later for Americans (as an enterprise run by the federal government), served as the economic backbone of the islands until it ended in 1984.
But the cost of maintaining boats outweighed the profits, and the corporation pulled out of the fishing industry in 1986 after it lost millions of dollars and a 120-foot boat at sea.
In 1997, The Aleut Corp. held a two-day summit so shareholders could create a unified front on the vital issue of subsistence hunting and fishing.
In 1998 its revenues grew by more than 79 percent, more than any other of the top Alaska-based companies, according to the Alaska Business Monthly.
Interestingly, the “newest” village is Adak, established on Adak Island in 1998 following the closure of the United States Naval station there and the transfer of its facilities to the regional Aleut Corporation.
