Alex and Ani company history timeline

2004

The retail was founded by Carolyn Rafaelian in 2004 and is a combination of the first names of her daughters.

In 2004, Carolyn officially launched the brand with five crystal-adorned cocktail rings.

2009

The first Alex and Ani store opened in Newport in 2009, and in addition to the stand-alone stores, the jewellery was sold across other international departmental stores in America.

2011

In 2011, our CHARITY BY DESIGN Collection launched with a mission of giving back to non-profits.

2012

Another master stroke: licensing deals starting in 2012 with Walt Disney, the National Football League, sororities and, yes, the United States military, all of which found that women loved the opportunity to show off their allegiances.

Her sister still runs her father's old factory (which the two siblings now own; he died in 2012). And inside her chic office, Rafaelian points to a worn leather suitcase atop a filing cabinet.

2014

The pair raised a war chest courtesy of private equity firm JH Partners, which took a 20% stake. (JH Partners cashed out in 2014, flipping the stake to another investor, Lion Capital, in a deal that valued the company at $1 billion.)

2017

In 2017, Forbes ranked Rafaelian the 18th-richest self-made woman in the United States, with a net worth of more than $1 billion.

2018

In September 2018, the company launched the Liberty Copper Collection, that featured original copper preserved from the centennial restoration of the Statue of Liberty.

2019

In July 2019, Alex and Ani sued Bank of America, accusing the lender of gender bias and forcing the company into a "death spiral" by placing it into default of a loan.

By 2019, Alex and Ani was cutting costs and falling behind on payments to vendors as sales fell.

2020

Rafaelian expects this to double by 2020, which means competing in foreign markets with Pandora, the $12 billion (market cap) Danish sterling silver brand, which operates 2,100 stores worldwide.
