Alfred Music company history timeline

1922

Since 1922, Alfred Music has been a world leader in music education and has helped over 10 million individuals learn, teach, and play music through our pedagogically sound products.

1923

His aim was to publish high-quality books, regardless of their sales potential, and he was said to be embarrassed by the success of his bestselling book, The Prophet (1923), by Khalil Gibran.

1928

Sam Manus, a violinist who had provided background music for silent movies, bought the company in 1928.

1930

In 1930, Sam acquired the music publisher, Alfred & Company, founded by Alfred Haase.

1946

Leo Sowerby had a long and distinguished relationship with H.W. Gray creating new works, including the publication of his Canticle of the Sun, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1946.

1950

In 1950, Sam's son Morty, a clarinetist and pianist, and his wife Iris, began working for the company.

1972

Knopf became chairman emeritus of his firm in 1972.

1984

By the time of Knopf’s death in 1984 the authors published by the Knopf house had garnered a total of 16 Nobel and 27 Pulitzer prizes.

1989

Alfred Sacred was founded in 1989 when Morton Manus (late President of Alfred Music) decided to expand the Alfred School Choral Catalog.

1990

The 1990’s were a great period of expansion in church music publishing and Alfred Sacred rode the wave of that increase.

2005

In 2005, Alfred Publishing acquired Warner Bros.

While continuing to develop the world’s leading instructional methods and performance music, they also expanded Alfred Music internationally, establishing offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. In 2005, Alfred Music purchased Warner Bros.

2009

Jubilate Music was founded in 2009 by music publisher/producer/writer Mark Cabaniss during his tenure as head of Word Music.

2010

The first Jubilate Music publications were released in May, 2010 through summer reading sessions and its first national promotion, introducing Jubilate as “A New Voice in Sacred Music.”

2013

The transaction was completed in October, 2013 and Jubilate moved to Alfred, joining the Alfred Sacred catalog to comprise Alfred Music’s church publishing division.

2016

Accordingly, Jubilate Music Group, LLC opened its doors on January 1, 2016.

As the winds of change continued to blow through the music publishing business, and following the death of Morton Manus, Alfred Music joined the corporate portfolio of Peaksware Holdings, LLC in 2016.

2019

In March, 2019, Jubilate Music Group acquired the Brodt Music Publications catalog, adding yet more quality choral and instrumental publications to its family of music publishing catalogs.
