Alice Hyde Medical Center history

1911 - Physicians Hospital opens at the corner of William and Court Streets.

1926 - On January 1, an all new showplace facility, Physicians Hospital, opens on Beekman Street, thanks to wealthy Chazy entrepreneur William H. Miner.

Alice Peck Day was a fifth generation resident of Lebanon, NH. Upon her death in 1927, she bequeathed her family home to found a cottage hospital.

In 1930, the American Legion made a generous donation that provided a means to build a pediatric ward to be located in The American Legion Memorial Wing.

Doctor Arthur Burnham, one of the area's leading physicians, helped lead the drive for incorporation, and APD opened its doors for the first time on February 1, 1932.

1955 - A three-story addition is added to Champlain Valley Hospital.

In 1960, a five-story structure housing medical, surgical, obstetrical, and nursing units, as well as dietary, x-ray, emergency, and laundry services opened.

APD transitioned from a cottage hospital to a modern hospital with a new building in 1964.

1967 - On January 18, the Boards of the two hospitals sign an agreement to merge and create a single, strong Medical Center.

In 1968, the Alice Hyde Nursing Home opened to provide a home and 24-hour nursing care for Franklin County’s aging population.

1972 - On May 15, the lights are turned off at Champlain Valley Hospital for the final time and 95 patients transfer to the newly built addition on Beekman Street.

In an effort to keep pace with these advances the hospital opened the Ben and Irene Bregman Memorial Wing in 1989.

1990 - The FitzPatrick Cancer Center and other new services open.

Since 1996 the Medical Center has established five health centers and opened cancer, hemodialysis, ambulatory, and orthopedic and rehabilitation centers.

1997 - A new Emergency Department and a Health Plaza, which includes a Diagnostic Center and the Henry K. Freedman Renal Center, open.

1998 - Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine moves off campus to the Bayside Wellness Center in a joint venture with the YMCA.

1999 - A new Ambulatory Surgery Center opened in June at the CVPH Health Plaza and the first baby is born July 6 at the new Alice T. Miner Women & Children's Center.

2001 - A new, 12-bed mental health unit for children and adolescents opens.

2003 - Construction adds a new 14-bed intensive care unit and expanded cafeteria.

2004 - The Heart Center at CVPH introduces a new catheterization laboratory and cardiovascular surgical suite to facilitate the provision of coronary angioplasty and open-heart services.

2005 - A new satellite office for physical and occupational therapy and Valcour Imaging, a venture between Associates in Radiology of Plattsburgh, P.C. and CVPH open at 16 Degrandpre Way adjacent to the CVPH Health Plaza.

In 2006, APD raised $4.3 million to build the Robert A. Mesropian Center for Community Care.

2008 - New Surgery Addition opens with 9 operating suites, new front entrance, lobby and patient registration.

In 2009, Alice Hyde Medical Center was recognized as the Organization of the Year by the Malone Chamber of Commerce for its efforts to pursue innovative medicine, growth, and community programs.

Philanthropic support made possible a major renovation to the hospital’s medical-surgical inpatient wing in 2012.

2014 – Fletcher Allen Partners becomes The University of Vermont Health Network, a six-hospital network serving patients and their families in northern New York and Vermont.

APD became a member of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health system in 2016.

In 2017, all outpatient services began welcoming patients in the new 44,000 square-foot Multi-Specialty Clinic.
