Alice Lloyd College (ALC) is a private, four-year liberal arts institution. The mission of ALC is “to educate mountain people for positions of leadership”. The school provides an atmosphere where Christian values are prominent and students are encouraged to hold high personal standards and good character. The school offers bachelor's degrees in the arts and sciences, as well as pre-professional programs. Financial aid is provided to eligible students, primarily in the form of scholarships. Alice Lloyd College aims for no out-of-pocket tuition costs for all accepted full-time students from the 108-county service area in Appalachia, according to their website. Alice Lloyd College teaches students the values of the “Purpose Road Philosophy” and that “a life of service to God and Humanity is the desired result of one's walk upon the Purpose Road”. The school promotes and teaches a strong work ethic by having all full-time students participate in a self-help Student Work Program. ALC has four dormitory buildings, two for men and two for women. Most full-time students are expected to live on campus in one of the dorms. The school offers various types of organizations and clubs for students to participate in, assisting them in developing communication and teamwork skills.
