Alice’s history starts in 1910, when E.H. Shanklin built Alice Mill, named for his only daughter.
In 1923, A. Foster McKissick purchased the plant with his son, Ellison Smyth McKissick Sr. (Smyth III’s grandfather).
Just a few years later in 1929, the McKissicks built the Arial Plant just two miles north of Easley.
He also served in the South Carolina House of Representatives, (1978-92). He is widely believed to be the first non-attorney to chair the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Martin began his career at Alice Manufacturing Company in 1981 in Safety/OSHA compliance.
Smyth McKissick became president of the company in 1988 and has successfully led the company through most remarkable changes and challenges that the American textile industry has faced.
So in 2000, the same year Alice was feeling the effects of globalization, the company launched its new fashion bedding business.
In 2008, Alice upgraded its machinery with a multimillion dollar capital investment into new automated air jet weaving technology, which has significantly impacted production.
