Alliance Data was formed from the December 1996 merger of two entities: J.C. Penney's credit card processing unit and The Limited's credit card bank operation, named World Financial Network National Bank.
The company was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Plano, TX.“
In August 1998, Alliance Data acquired LoyaltyOne, then-branded The Loyalty Group Canada, for $250 million.
In May 2007, The Blackstone Group, a private equity firm, announced plans to acquire Alliance Data.
In April 2008, Alliance Data terminated the merger agreement with Blackstone Affiliates.
Charles Horn joined Alliance Data in 2009 as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, after holding similar finance leadership positions with Builders Firstsource, Inc., and Pier 1 Imports, Inc.
He joined the company in 2010 as Treasury & Corporate Development Vice President, with responsibility for Alliance Data’s global M&A growth strategy, including strategy formulation, target identification and transaction execution.
Joe Motes joined Alliance Data in 2015, after nearly 20 years with leading law firm Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, LLP, where he was the partner and lead relationship manager for Alliance Data.
Joe was promoted to chief administrative officer in June of 2019, where he oversees a number of the Company’s internal corporate functions and organizations in addition to his continuing responsibilities as general counsel and secretary.
On June 7, 2019, Ed Heffernan resigned as CEO of Alliance Data and was replaced by Melisa Miller, who previously ran Alliance Data's Card Services division.
Val joined Alliance Data in June 2020 as the Chief Commercial Officer of Alliance Data Card Services.
