About the role
The Controller will be the accounting leader responsible for building and owning the company's end-to-end accounting framework. This role will ensure accurate financial reporting, timely month-end closes, robust internal controls, revenue recognition discipline, and scalable accounting processes that support a high-volume software + services business.
This is a hands-on role that requires strong technical accounting knowledge, exceptional process ownership, and the ability to work cross-functionally with finance, operations, and leadership.
Work Location:
This position will report to the Senior Director of Finance. This role requires days in office at our Downtown Sarasota office with work from home days.
What You'll Do
Accounting Leadership & Month-End Close
Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process; ensure accuracy and timeliness across all statements.
Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
Establish and enforce close timelines, checklists, and review controls.
Drive continuous improvement of close processes to shorten cycle time.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
Prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements and supporting schedules.
Lead technical accounting research and policy implementation (revenue recognition, expense capitalization, reserves, etc.).
Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure consistent application across departments.
Support audit readiness and future audit processes.
Revenue Recognition & Billing Support
Oversee revenue accounting for software reseller transactions, subscription services, and professional services.
Ensure proper treatment of multi-element arrangements, upfront vs. ongoing revenue, and renewals.
Partner with billing, order processing, and sales ops to implement accurate and scalable revenue workflows.
Internal Controls & Process Ownership
Design, implement, and maintain internal controls across AP, AR, collections, and cash management.
Oversee vendor onboarding, payment authorization workflows, and fraud-prevention controls.
Create standardized accounting policies, documentation, and training.
AP/AR & Operations Support
Oversee day-to-day AP/AR, collections, and cash application.
Implement workflows for high-volume transactional processes.
Guide and mentor accounting staff, including order processing and billing.
Systems & Tools
Own accounting systems setup, integrity, and optimization.
Drive improvements in Intacct (nice-to-have), integrations, and workflow automation.
Cross-Functional Partnership
Work closely with the Senior Director of Finance on budgeting, variance analysis, and strategy.
Partner with operations, sales, and leadership to ensure financial accuracy and alignment.
Provide insights and recommendations to support decision-making and scalability.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
Public accounting experience (Big 4 or reputable regional firm) required.
7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
Strong technical accounting background under U.S. GAAP.
Demonstrated experience leading a month-end close process.
Ability to build accounting processes, controls, and documentation from the ground up.
Strong attention to detail, high ownership, and ability to thrive in a fast-moving environment.
Experience in SaaS, software reseller, technology services, or subscription-based industries.
Experience with Sage Intacct or similar mid-market accounting systems.
Prior experience managing small accounting teams.
Familiarity with high-volume billing, AP/AR workflows, and multi-entity or multi-currency environments.
Strong ability to balance hands-on execution with process and policy design.
