This position works in all weather conditions. The apprenticeship... Our apprenticeship programs is approximately three and a half years and is a combination of classroom and on-the-job training. We have a training staff dedicated to making the duration of the apprenticeship well rounded, challenging and valuable. Where you will work Gas Technicians serve our Wisconsin Power and Light customers. Training for the apprenticeship will take place at our training facility and throughout our service territories. Training will include travel during the apprenticeship working with other teams. Residency There are emergency response and travel requirements in this role. Because of this, the selected applicant will be required to meet the 25-minutes residency requirement under the contractual guidelines. What you will do * Maintains and installs gas underground distribution systems; installs electric underground cable, pedestal stakes and ground rods when performed concurrently with gas; installs gas mains; installs and maintains gas services, including regulators, relief valves and meters; sets hydrants and valves; locates and repairs leaks; reads gas meters; taps mains and makes connections. * Trains employees in lower classifications for short periods of time and on simple projects, such as installing services, etc. * Maintains and uses gas and electric related equipment as assigned and trained for such as lead, line and other trucks, digging, boring, lifting, drilling, and locating equipment, etc. * Performs in conjunction with emergency restoration, construction, maintenance or meter exchanges, incidental customer servicing work as necessary to provide safe and effective use of gas such as appliance inspections, pilot relighting, customer pipe and equipment, leak detection, meter exchanges, etc. * Assist Service Department work load in performance of periodic gas meter exchanges. * Locates gas and electric underground utility facilities. * Inspects contractor work as assigned. * Performs necessary clerical work as assigned. * Responsible for exercising good customer relations skills. * Keeps customers informed as related to work being performed. * Performs pipe joining. * Performs all work according to established company procedures and safety practices. * Performs other duties which are similar, related or incidental to this position. Education Requirements * High School Diploma or GED Required Experience * Completion of the gas technician apprenticeship and pass the final position qualification examination (journey level only) Other Requirements * Must possess a valid driver's license. * Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License prior to the end of trial period * This position is covered by the Department of Transportation regulations on drug/alcohol testing (CFR 49, Parts 40, 199 and 382), and is subject to drug/alcohol testing according to said regulations.
