    Decision Analysis and Support (DAS) Lab in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Fixed-Term). As a member of the DAS Lab, the Research Associate will also become a member of the Quantitative Fisheries Center. This position is funded for at least two years, with potential for extensions pending funding. The preferred start date is 1 January 2026, but a later start date may be considered. The successful candidate will co-lead the development of a structured decision making (SDM) process for an experimental Cisco reintroduction in Lake Erie, specifically in New York and Pennsylvania waters. The overarching goal is to work collaboratively with Lake Erie fisheries managers to identify and evaluate experimental Cisco stocking strategies and complementary restoration actions (e.g., spawning habitat construction or restoration) that align with agency objectives, account for uncertainty, and support long-term recovery of Cisco in Lake Erie. This work will operationalize the “Restore” phase of the Coregonine Restoration Framework (Bunnell et al., 2023) and, ideally, illustrate how this process could be transferable to other Great Lakes jurisdictions. This position will also provide support for the Research Associate to contribute to other DAS Lab projects that align with the candidate's research interests. Project in the DAS Lab occur in multiple Great Lakes systems and would provide opportunities to apply diverse decision analysis tools, including multi-criteria decision analysis, risk analysis, value of information, and optimization. The position will be supervised by Dr. Marjorie ‘Mauri' Liberati, while working closely with partners from the Greak Lakes Science Center, New York Department of Conservation, and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. This position is an excellent opportunity to engage with agency professionals across the Great Lakes basin. The preferred work location for this position is East Lansing, MI, with travel to in-person workshops in northern New York and Pennsylvania covered by project funding. While we would prefer candidates who are willing to be located in southern Michigan, we are willing to discuss remote work arrangements. Responsibilities include: Co-lead collaborative workshops with agency partners to iteratively develop and refine a decision prototype for Cisco restoration in Lake Erie. Integrate research products from the Coregonine Restoration Framework to predict management outcomes and identify (or pursue) expanded analyses to support the decision analysis. Develop predictive decision analysis to determine optimal allocation of management actions (e.g., stocking) and optimization analyses under various uncertainties. In addition to engaging in EPIC research, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will be supported in establishing their own research agenda within EPIC's major focus areas. In support of this, the successful candidate will be able to leverage key features of EPIC and the College, including EPIC's unprecedented data sharing agreement with the State of Michigan that provides access to all administrative educational data sets with regular updates. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work with other EPIC researchers to conduct appropriate and rigorous quantitative analyses, co-author peer-reviewed publications, and present research at national conferences and to policymaker partners in Michigan. In addition, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will gain valuable experience working with agency partners, interfacing with state officials and stakeholders, and providing them with evidence to inform policymaking and program implementation. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will also gain experience with project management and leading a team of doctoral student and staff researchers. The Postdoctoral Research Associate must have a completed doctoral degree or be on track to successfully defend their dissertation prior to beginning the position. Preference will be given to candidates with strong econometric skills, experience working with large administrative datasets, facility with analyzing survey data, and strong evidence of writing capability. The Fitzpatrick Lab is interested in the evolutionary and ecological processes that determine adaptation, fitness, and ultimately persistence in small populations. We primarily work on freshwater fish, including the Eastern mosquitofish as a model system, as well as with a diverse set of non-model organisms, including amphibians, butterflies, reptiles, and birds. The primary responsibility of this position will be to assist with and lead data collection, analysis, and write manuscripts associated with our project testing 'adapt or die' responses in experimental populations of Eastern mosquitofish.     A research associate (postdoctoral position) is available in the Evans Lab at Michigan State University's Kellogg Biological Station in soil microbial ecology. The postdoc would work on a USDA-funded grant examining effects of conservation zones (zones of native prairie or perennial grasses embedded in agricultural lands) on ecosystem services in the US Midwest. Our team of collaborators is examining how these perennial areas affect carbon sequestration, nematode communities, pollinators, and microbial communities, at local and regional scales, and working closely with stakeholders to implement and test zones on managed lands. The successful candidate would synthesize patterns of shifts in microbial communities and microbial function with prairie/perennial restoration in existing studies across the Midwest, with the goal of predicting how shifts in Midwest land use (including widespread conservation zone implementation) might improve or alter microbial biodiversity and services. Thus experience working with sequencing pipelines (bioinformatics and statistical analysis), public sequencing databases, and meta-analysis are desired and should be highlighted in a cover letter, as should any experience or interest in learning spatial biogeographical microbial modeling, or experience probing microbial function.
