Dr. Smith is recognized as a national leader in the treatment of substance abuse and dependency, the psychopharmacology of drugs, new research strategies in the management of drug abuse problems, and appropriate prescribing practices for physicians. He is the founder of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics of San Francisco and recently received the Annual Award of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Smith currently chairs the Adolescent Addiction Medicine program at Newport Academy and is Medical Director at Center Point. He held the position of Medical Director at the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics for nearly 40 years, and has led other treatment programs.Dr. Smith is the founder and publisher of the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs and co-author of Unchain Your Brain, with Dr. Daniel Amen. He has also authored or co-authored 26 books, written over 340 journal articles, edited 28 journals, and been the technical consultant for 28 drug abuse-related films. He maintains an active speaking and lecture schedule. Dr. Smith's appointments have included Adjunct Professor at the University of California, San Francisco, Immediate Past Medical Director for the California State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, and Past Medical Director for the California Collaborative Center for Substance Abuse Policy Research. Dr. Smith is also a Fellow and Past President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and Past President of the California Society of Addiction Medicine. In addition, he is a Certified Medical Review Officer. He has served as Principal Investigator for numerous research grants, and been active in health care reform, parity for mental health and substance use services, and acceptance of addiction medicine as a recognized medical specialty. He has been a member of many committees, commissions, and task forces.
