Post job

Yes, Amazon drug tests. Before being hired, Amazon will ask each candidate to take a comprehensive drug test. In recent years, however, they have reduced some of their restrictions on what you can have in your system.

Amazon no longer includes cannabis in its comprehensive drug-testing program for positions not regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). While this doesn’t mean they allow employees to come to work intoxicated, it does mean they no longer automatically dismiss a candidate who tests positive for cannabis. Truck drivers and heavy equipment operators are exceptions to this policy because those roles are regulated by the DOT.

For Amazon positions that are regulated by the DOT, they not only require a drug test prior to onboarding but may also do impairment checks on the job where they test for drugs and alcohol, especially after an incident has occurred.

Understanding Amazon Drug Test Procedures

Although Amazon no longer tests most employees for marijuana, the company continues to use a comprehensive drug screening program to monitor new and existing employees for signs of substance abuse, including opioids like heroin, oxycodone, and morphine.

The company’s recently adjusted its drug policy in which marijuana use, for the most part, is not tested for — applies to Amazon’s field operations teams based in the United States. Some select positions, however, are not included in the policy change.

Amazon employees holding jobs that are regulated by the United States Department of Transportation, including delivery truck drivers and operators of heavy machinery, are still subject to marijuana drug testing as per federal law.

As one of the most recognized global brands, Amazon continues to hold its employees to high standards. As such, comprehensive drug testing, including marijuana and alcohol screenings, may also be implemented after incidents or to monitor for on-the-job impairment.

Drug Testing Timeline for Amazon Employees

Whether you apply for a position at Amazon through their online application portal, at a community job fair, or directly at one of their many local warehouses or storefronts, and you’re ultimately offered a position working for the second-largest private employer in the United States, you’ll be required to complete a drug test.

Generally, after acing your job interview and accepting an employment offer, Amazon will run a background check on you and require you to get drug tested prior to your first scheduled day on the job.

Depending on where you’re located and what local facility Amazon outsources its drug testing to in your area, you’ll likely be required to complete either a urine or mouth swab drug test.

Once your pre-employment tests come back and you’re cleared to start working, you’re not off the hook just yet. In addition to screening new employees, Amazon also implements random drug screenings, which some employees report can be as often as once a month.

Additionally, if you are ever involved in an incident or accident, get promoted, or receive a new job title, you will also typically be required to pass another drug screening.
