Sr. Thermal Design Engineer, Project Kuiper
Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.
We are looking for an outstanding Sr. Thermal Design Engineer who combines strong technical, research and analytical capabilities with a demonstrated ability to get the right work done quickly and effectively. The successful candidate must have experience working in spacecraft design, producing top notch thermal analysis and providing essential thermal related input and recommendations to vehicle architects and subsystem leads.
Responsibilities:
* Support extensive architectural trades with preliminary thermal analysis on spacecraft and subsystems for orbital operational conditions and vehicle control options.
* Perform detailed and comprehensive analyses of bus and payload subsystems, components and mechanisms.
* Drive design optimization for performance, mass and cost, while meeting system reliability requirements through application of a range of thermal control hardware options.
* Design, analyze and select heat pipes as needed for bus and payload components.
* Develop automated scripts enabling rapid analysis updates accommodating trades (e.g., power states, duty cycle, structural mapping).
* Define, lead and execute thermal cycling and thermal vacuum tests for development and qualification testing at subsystem and vehicle levels.
* Correlate thermal models based on test results.
* Define and select test equipment as needed (e.g., TVAC and thermal chambers, sensors, data logging equipment)
* Conduct testing of prototypes and engineering models for fast design feedback loops.
* Drive qualification and acceptance testing procedures, simulation and execution.
* Document trades and design evolution, and present results during design reviews.
* Support thermal design for terrestrial equipment and systems with CFD analysis as appropriate.
Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
* Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
* 5+ years of experience with analysis simulation software, including writing custom scripts to enable rapid design trades and iterations for spacecraft and subsystem configuration optimizations for various orbital cases and duty cycle scenarios.
* 2+ years experience with spacecraft thermal design, and delivering design solution optimized for mass, cost, reliability, performance, and manufacturability.
* 2+ years experience with test planning, test set-up, results correlation and system verification for production.
* 2+ years experience in development and/or selection of thermal control hardware (e.g., materials and finishes, thermal interface materials, MLI blankets, heat-pipes, radiators, temperature sensors, and heaters).
* 2+ years experience with Thermal Desktop (SINDA), Ansys and Python.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in mechanical engineering or related field.
* Having developed hardware and spacecraft that have been to space and successfully operated as intended.
* Experience with Python or Matlab for performing analysis and automation of simulations
* Experience with OpenTD.
* Experience interpreting and correlating data from on-orbit telemetry
* Experience in design, analysis, manufacturing, testing and integration of heat pipes for space applications.
* CAD skills (NX or Solidworks)
* Experience with thermal design implementations for high volume production.
* Design for batch testing for subsystem workmanship tests

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $114,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
