In April 1915, a Pulmotor resuscitator was purchased and placed in the equipment room of Company #1 for emergency use.
Manchester Ambulance (as it was originally known) was founded in 1959 by J. Stewart Johnston, Thomas Carpenter and Roger Talbot Sr.
MANCHESTER — From a single “hearse-style” wagon and a crew of three in 1959, Ambulance Service of Manchester has grown to 190 employees and 30 ambulances serving the area from East Hartford to Stafford Springs.
In 1969, as requests from the public gradually increased, Roger split-off from the other founders, hired employees, bought more ambulances and moved into a three-bay garage at 134 East Center Street.
The outfit moved to a three-bay garage at 134 Center St in 1969 and its territory expanded to include East Hartford and Bolton.
The Manchester Board of Directors created the Emergency Medical Services Council in 1980 as an advisory panel to explore the feasibility of paramedics.
In February of 1981 the EMS Council drafted a proposal to have the South Manchester Fire Department operate the service utilizing monies from the General Fund.
Also in 1988, the Department also recognized the need for a mid-management level position for the Emergency Medical Services program and created the job title of Captain - EMS/Hazardous Materials.
In 1988, the call volume supported the need for a second ALS unit and the Department purchased a Chevrolet Suburban.
The Department advanced to a new level of patient care in October 1996 with the purchase and deployment of two Lifepak 11 monitor/defibrillators.
