Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) is a for profit, wholly owned subsidiary of the American Angus Association (Association). The primary goal of AGI is to drive the strategic vision of how genetic and genomic technology will influence decisions made by the Association's stakeholders. AGI has access to the largest single beef breed genomic database (>1,500,000 genotypes) in the world accompanied by tens of millions of phenotypic records to drive research and innovation. In addition, AGI provides client specific genetic evaluation services to various breed organizations in the United States, Australia, and Canada. The internship program can be tailored to the interest of the individual student, even in some cases, allowing the student to include the internship project in their graduate school program. Research opportunities can include the opportunity to develop and evaluate novel traits in beef cattle to finding new ways to use genomic data in commercially available genetic evaluation pipelines. The intern is expected to conduct research on economically relevant traits in beef cattle including fertility and reproductive efficiency, feed efficiency, and performance. Internship Job Duties: Develop familiarity with American Angus Association genetic evaluation pipeline and data used. Develop appropriate definition of potential traits to evaluate in beef genomic evaluations. Evaluate statistical models and estimate genetic parameters for economically relevant traits in beef cattle. Write a technical report, present results and make recommendations to the Genetic Evaluation Team based on their findings. Internship Qualifications: Currently enrolled in an advanced graduate level degree in Animal Science, Genetics, Statistics, or related field. The internship program will provide a college sophomore, junior or senior the opportunity to assist with the planning and execution of junior shows and leadership events. The Angus/Talon Youth Educational Learning Program Internship is a valuable learning experience for both interns and host ranches.
